Job Description

VOLT is looking for an AI Engineer to author AI systems while collaborating with the design and production teams to create and implement them.  

If you are a thoughtful collaborator, with a deep understanding of—and appreciation for—player experiences across a variety of game genres and audiences, we’d love to talk with you.

What You’ll Do

  • Work with the engineering and design teams to determine all Artificial Intelligence (AI) requirements.
  • Directly implement specific aspects of the Artificial Intelligence in the game.
  • Work closely with designers and animators to develop a core set of believable and fun AI behaviors.
  • Design, implement, and maintain strategic, efficient, and realistic path finding and path following algorithms as well as formation and grouping algorithms.
  • Develop reliable real-time debugging tools to enable designers and QA to help pinpoint problem areas.

Engineering Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the design and engineering teams to implement specific game or Editor features
  • Debug existing features for bugs, and performance issues.
  • Produce functional, maintainable code that meets performance requirements
  • Engage in code review of existing and new code to improve code quality whenever possible.
  • Assist with improving existing documentation as well as ensuring consistent documentation and adherence to coding standards in newly developed code.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering, QA, and Production teams to maximize your contributions.
  • Provide achievable task estimations based on your own ability.

What You’ll Bring

  • You’ve worked on a variety of projects - big or small, indie or 1st party, PC or console or mobile, licensed or new IP, etc. - to understand the breadth of issues you have to anticipate and know that every project is different
  • You have shipped 3D titles and have used Unity
  • You have working knowledge and passion concerning AI problems and their solutions in games.
  • You are proficient in C#
  • You are proficient with modern AI technology and willing to work inside of existing AI tech, or roll your own solutions as needed.
  • You are comfortable working with others in a highly-collaborative, fun, and agile environment.
  • Must have a shipped game title as an AI engineer
  • Able to collaborate on direction of the architecture of the game
  • Experienced interpreting and implementing behavior trees and finite state machines  
  • Must have the experience and shared language to be able to partner with designers and artists
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with different audiences.
