Job Description

Volt Workforce Solutions has an immediate opening for an Chemist to work onsite with our customer on a long term contract in Mossville, IL.  The chemist position will be supporting the customer's research and development team on non-metallic parts, including rubber.  Specifically, the chemist will use the following instruments/techniques to identify chemistry of contaminants from various sources:

  • Solvents and general chemical separation techniques
  • FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) to identify organic contaminants; ATR – ID of nonmetallics, plastics, rubber etc; FTIR Microscope – ID of microscopic samples; General interpretation of FTIR data as pertains to system
  • Thermogravimetric analysis (rubber/nonmetallic) – temperature stability of materials, elastomer analysis, debris identification. 
  • Differential scanning calorimetry (rubber/nonmetallic) – melting point, glass transition temp, and oxidation onset of elastomers and other nonmetallic.
  • Interprets SEM/EDS results (elemental and microscopic data) 
  • Generates both technical reports and non-technical explanations, through thorough photo documentation (camera and microscope) 
  • Performs filter analysis – gas, oil, air, and fuel filter flushing with solvent, sieving debris by size, and identifying debris using FTIR and other techniques. 
  • Submits failure-related samples to and discusses/understands results from other internal or external labs. 
  • Conducts specific chemical requests – corrosion, urea, immersion, and other ASTM testing that has a predetermined procedure. 
  • Uses Standards Connect database to research methods/protocols for potential testing.

Work Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field.
  • Ability to work closely with client/engineer to help understand context of contaminant identified in system
  • Ability to employ independent research to understand context of contaminant identified in system
  • Will meet with client, sometimes on a repeating basis, to explain results and suggest next steps
  • Previous experience working with oil and manufacturing fluid analysis support, including titration, liquid FTIR, Karl Fischer, particle count, ion chromatography, conductivity, gas chromatography, and pH 
  • Excellent work ethic, initiative, and a positive attitude are required.
  • Good communication, teamwork skills, and the ability to support a high velocity-manufacturing environment are critical.
