Chemist (6-month contract) Minnetonka, MN $24-26/hr. (DOE)

Volt has partnered with a growing manufacturing company in search of a Chemist! The Scientist/Chemist will be responsible for performing experiments and coordinating testing.


  • Optimization of the laboratory level synthesis of polymer materials and associated raw materials. Assist in transfer to production as required.
  • Perform laboratory-based polymer characterization tests and evaluate the effect of variables.
  • Assistance with the use of Quality/Analytical equipment for the characterization of raw materials and polymers. This will involve operation and assistance with FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), GPC (Gel permeation Chromatography), and HPLC (High performance Liquid Chromatography). Write clear and concise experimental test plans, analyze results, and prepare reports. Document all experimental activities in a laboratory notebook.
  • Assisting in laboratory management by cleaning glassware, ordering equipment and supplies, and helping with general laboratory cleaning and organization.
  • Perform polymer synthesis reactions, safe handling of lab equipment and chemicals, synthesis of in-house raw materials and manage the lab-based purification of raw materials.
  • Assist with laboratory tests on materials and quality analysis.
  • Handle and use chemicals according to procedures outlines in MSDS.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in the laboratory including safe handling of chemicals and waste.
  • Monitor on-going studies for un-expected results and observations, communicate such occurrences to supervisor, and assist in root cause analysis.
  • Assist in developing new experimental processes and procedures and improving existing ones.
  • Write experimental test plans, analyze results, and prepare reports? Document all experimental activities in a laboratory notebook.


  • B.A. or B.S. degree in analytical chemistry with 0-3 years of experience (A.A. degree will be considered with proven experience).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capable of learning to operate various analytical instruments including: HPLC/UPLC, Balances, Karl Fisher, pH Meter and other analytical equipment.
  • Experience in medical device industry or pharmaceutical quality control laboratory and GMP laboratory experience.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, Waters Empower software.
