Composites Technician

A Day in the Life

You will help change the landscape of the rocket launch industry and be an integral and unique part of a close-knit team of individuals operating in a high energy environment. As a Composite Technicianresponsibilities include filament winding, inspection and testing composite components, composite part lamination, prototype tool fabrication, automated machine operation, post-assembly inspection, and metal component fitting/fabrication. The perfect candidate is a team motivator, preaches creativity, strives for quality, and is constantly learning. This is a full-time position located at our Long Beach, CA facility.

Your Mission:

  • Entry Level: 2 years’ experience manufacturing composite parts using hand layup, RTM, SCRIMP, filament winding, or prepreg lamination methods
  • Senior Level: +5 years applicable composites work and lead roles.  Experience with driving teams to a successful on-time delivery of critical hardware
  • Perform work instructions and adhere to quality standards for fabricating composite structures
  • Interpret engineering drawings and lamination schedules
  • Anticipate needs, identify problems, think creatively, and rapidly produce reliable and cost-effective solutions to meet the ever growing and changing needs of our research and development efforts

You Have:

  • An aptitude and a work history that supports your competency or ability in the following:
    • Filament Winding:
      • Winding experience
      • Programming experience using SimWind, FlexWind, and/or FiberGrafix
    • Inspection and testing composite components
      • Utilize ultrasonic or radiography methods to inspect and test composite composite
    • Composites parts fabrication and repair:
      • Cutting composite fabrics and laying up composite fabrics by hand in molds to fabricate parts
      • Assembly of tools to be used for injection molding parts to be consumed in manufacturing
      • Use of weighing scales to properly ratio resins to hardener and to track material weights consumed by the part
      • Measuring and placing stations on tooling mold surfaces to locate composite fabric plies per engineering drawings
      • Vacuum bagging systems
      • Identifies acceptable defects. Uses applicable inspection criteria for non-destructive inspection
      • Operates curing ovens and monitors cycle functions
    • Assembly:
      • Cleaning
      • Hand sanding composite surfaces
      • Dry fitting components
      • Hand finishing parts to fit including hand trimming
      • Wet layup (using adhesives and fabrics)
      • Fixing/locating structure
      • Forklift operations consisting of gathering and placing parts
      • Follow instructions precisely to complete complex assemblies accurately
    • Bonding:
      • Use adhesives (pastes, liquids, and films)
      • Co-curing and secondary bonding
      • Surface preparations utilizing adhesion promotors and other surface modifiers

Strongly Desirable: 

  • Experience in inspection and test composite components using ultrasonic or radiography methods
  • Experience with hands-on in the fabrication and assembly of large composite structures
