Job Description

Senior Systems Engineer

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment on the development of complex electromechanical instruments and systems. Our instruments and production equipment are complex systems with electromechanical, fluidic, thermal, optical, and often acoustic sub-systems. One of the focuses of this position will be to work across domains to ensure broader system functionality meets higher level requirements, which often includes the software that controls the instruments and the consumables that run within them.

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Systems engineering – not just breaking down system requirements into lower level (domain specific) functional requirements, but also looking at the combined functionality of all sub-systems to ensure the broader system functional requirements are met. 
  • Use a combination of closed-form calculations, FEA/CFD, 3rd party performance curves, etc., to model systems as appropriate to ensure system performance can be met
  • Assume lead engineering role in the development of new instruments, or the re-architecture of existing ones to enhance functionality
  • Develop plans for verification through testing, and modeling and simulation or analysis as appropriate, execute tests, and document results
  • Design and build automation systems or sub-systems using a combination of 3rd party instrumentation and in-house designed apparatus.  Responsibilities also include the design and fabrication of in-house apparatus also to satisfy automation requirements
  • Participate in project planning sessions to define tasks that need to be done to achieve a certain desired outcome, as well as labor estimates for tasks
  • Participate in FMEA analysis – you may be asked to drive sessions related to system functionality

Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics w/ 5+ years of post-college experience, or MS w/ 3+ years of experience, including 2 years (minimum) as technical lead for the development of a complex electro-mechanical system/instrument
  • 2+ years of SOLIDWORKS experience
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and 13485
  • Familiarity with dynamics & controls, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, FEA and CFD
  • Familiarity with CE/UL/CSA/EU Regulatory Requirements and processes desired
  • Familiar w/ structured problem-solving methods, such as A3, Fishbone, Six-Step, etc.
  • Experience designing plastic components with fundamental understanding of plastic part fabrication processes.
  • Exposure to biotechnology/bioengineering – familiarity with common instrumentation (NGS, PCR, Rt-PCR, common DNA sequencers, etc.), workflows (end-to-end for genomics, DNA sequencing, proteomics, epigenomics, etc.), and processes (including sample prep and purification, enzymatic fragmentation, lysing, etc.)
