Job Description

VOLT is seeking candidates for a Full-time “Optical Engineer" on the Seattle East side.  Candidate needs to reside in or be willing to relocate to the Greater Seattle area and work onsite for 60% to 75% of the time in the client's lab. 

The Position:

This position is an Analyst role.  Passion for analysis and testing required.   Looking for candidates who are upbeat and enthusiastic and have a passion for analysis. 

What You will be Doing:

  • Develop and analyze optical models in Zemax for product development and concept studies.
  • Develop and validate optical performance models in MATLAB and Simulink
  • Design and develop optics for lidar products from conceptual design through manufacturing release (beam shaping, wavelength or polarization combining, distortion correction).
  • Design and execute testing of optical components, diode lasers, optical sub-systems and complete products. Report results to engineering team and management.


  • BS in Optical Engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in new product design and development.
  • Demonstrated experience using optical software such as Zemax (sequential and non-sequential modes)
  • Experience designing lenses, free form optics and beam shaping optics for laser-based devices
  • Experience with equipment and instrumentation to measure optical power, beam characteristics, polarization, beam alignment, etc.
  • Hands on experience with laser diodes, lenses, prisms, and other optical components to build and test prototypes and components
  • Knowledge of Python and MATLAB
  • Experience with basic statistics, writing and executing detailed test plans, and preparing technical reports
  • Solid communication and problem-solving skills, ability to understand complex systems and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.
