Power Electronics Engineer - Advance Design

This manufacturing company located in Denton, Texas (near Dallas) which is a global technology leader in the design, manufacture and customer support of premium light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks under the Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF nameplates is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer for a full-time, direct role. The client also designs and manufactures advanced diesel engines, provides financial services, information technology, and distributes truck parts related to its principal business. The Advance Design team is looking for a Power Electronics engineer with interest in supporting innovative design development.  Duties involve interface with the company Technical Center, the company Global Electric Powertrain Team, Product Planning, Marketing & Sales, and Management to evaluate customer requirements and definition of vehicle level targets that support launching the next generation of industry leading trucks.  Scope of work includes working on new development programs, analysis of potential new product designs, employing innovative skills to mature ideas from concepts, problem resolution, and other engineering duties supporting various aspects of product development

Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and recommend battery cells, battery packs, traction motors, BMS, power electronics, and electric powertrain controls for a full range of commercial vehicle electrification applications from micro hybrids to full EVs
  • Define electrified powertrain architectures & systems for heavy and medium duty trucks
  • Benchmarking activities, technology evaluation projects, and participate in development of validation standards for electric components, systems and vehicles
  • System-oriented understanding of thermal, vehicle-level torque control, high voltage DC-link integration, efficiency optimization, and firmware integration for electric drives
  • Knowledgeable in thermal management techniques for power conversion and protection applications
  • Experience with vehicle CAN bus communication and Vector CANalyzer is preferred
  • Must be willing to travel (10-20%)

Skills / Competencies

  • Three years of experience in electric powertrain development/R&D
  • In-depth experience with at least one of: battery cells, battery packs, traction motors, BMS, electric powertrain controls (and strong familiarity with the rest)
  • Background in system-level component selection, integration, performance, and thermal management
  • Familiarity with electric powertrain simulation tools
  • Experience as a contributor to cross-functional technical project teams
  • Previously demonstrated resourcefulness, strong technical knowledge, analytical capability, and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, be a self-starter and have demonstrated high levels of initiative and innovation

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
