Job Description

Volt is working with an Aerospace industry leader. We currently have an opening for a Principal Electrical Engineer. 

Estimated Assignment Length 12 - 15 months

What You’ll Do

  • Provide technical leadership and expertise in the area of EMI/EMC at the payload and/or spacecraft bus level for remote sensing applications during all phases of a program life-cycle from concept development through on-orbit commissioning.
  • Bus and payload/instrument design, modeling & simulation and application of detailed knowledge of EMI testing of boxes and subsystems. Verification of compliance to requirements at the subsystem level.
  • Define the electronics architecture for spacecraft subsystem and assembly level hardware.  This includes: technology assessments, instrument and/or spacecraft requirements flow-down to electronic subsystems, electronic requirements analysis and allocation, electrical subsystem conceptual development/trade studies, design leadership, supporting hardware development efforts for current and future program needs and providing system integration and test support.
  • Document and present analysis, findings, and design to customers.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the SBU/SSU and the Company.  Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What You’ll Need

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 12 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Active TS/SCI required.
  • Proven technical leader and expert in developing EMC/EMI requirements and design for electronics systems for classified programs. 
  • Expertise in the physics of EMI/EMC and system interactions at the physical layer.
  • Knowledgeable of space environmental factors (radiation, Total Ionizing Dose, etc.) and how they interact with EMC/EMI concerns.
  • Strong system level development experience (12 or more years) defining requirements, verification and validation methodologies, buying off requirements to deliver hardware to the next level of integration, etc. with expertise in the area of EMI/EMC.
  • Expert system level analytical skills including FMECA, WCA, reliability and risk mitigation.
  • Detailed knowledge of MIL-STD-461/462/464/1541, SMC-S-008/016 and related standards requirements and testing is required.
  • Technical team leadership experience.
  • Knowledgeable in FPGA-based electronics architecture and the impact of EMI on such architectures
  • In depth experience with redundant fault tolerant avionics, self-diagnostic and architecture/hardware design including trade-offs and characteristics and impact of EMI on such systems.
  • Familiarity with launch vehicle interface avionics.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, strong presentation skills and the ability to lead group discussions.
