Job Description

Volt is seeking an R&D Chemistry Associate to join our dynamic RNA chemistry team with focus on RNA synthesis for applications in CRISPR technologies. We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, self-motivated and innovation driven individual to become key contributor to RNA synthesis and purification labs. As part of the Diagnostics and Genomics Group, you will join an innovative, multidisciplinary team improving state-of-the-art technologies.  

Key responsibilities will include the preparation and purification of synthetic RNA and chemically modified synthetic RNA using automated solid-phase synthesis techniques and automated liquid handler systems. You will be pushing RNA synthesis state of the art using proprietary TC-RNA chemistry, and will be responsible for ordering, maintaining, and monitoring an inventory of chemical reagents, as well as maintenance and monitoring of the hardware components used for the synthesis, purification and analysis of the RNA products. You will be expected to help develop and optimize synthetic protocols and purification protocols and be able to organize the data generated into clear and easy to read reports. This role is best suited for individuals who have a passion for hands-on chemistry lab work and delivering high quality products. This role will require teamwork, collaboration, coordination of schedules and multi-tasking in thrive in dynamic environments. 

This role provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with Senior chemists in the Genomics team and manufacturing groups.  This position offers the opportunity to work on the development of a key product line in the CRISPR market which is expected to grow rapidly in the upcoming years.

This is your opportunity to build on your technical design support experience, while making recommendations for change and formulating the techniques that enhance design for performance. You'll determine and develop approaches to assignments, utilizing your able planning and judgment across technical design tasks and providing solutions for a broad range of problems.

Requires complete understanding of general and technical aspects of job.


  • MS/MA in Chemistry or Biochemistry, or equivalent.
  • 2+ years’ experience in the evaluation, analysis, characterization, purification, and optimization of purification protocols of oligonucleotides (RNA and DNA) via HPLC.
  • Exposure to solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis, using and trouble-shooting automated solid-phase synthesizers and optimizing synthetic protocols and reaction schemas.
  • Hands-on experience in using automated high throughput liquid handlers
  • Hands-on experience manipulating and synthesizing RNA in an R&D environment and practiced in anhydrous and RNAse-free lab techniques.
  • Hands on experience in Mass Spectrometry operation as it relates to analysis of oligonulceotides
  • Practiced in the development and bottling of buffers and reagents, as well as the management of laboratory chemicals and raw materials inventories.
  • Excellent teamwork and oral and written communication skills, including experience operating and documenting work under design control
  • Ability to work in team environment as well as independently and to execute and troubleshoot new methods.
  • Must be able to think on their feet and “outside the box” to solve problems
  • Excellent time management, record keeping, teamwork and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy including proficiency with Word and Excel.


  • Familiarity with a broad range of affinity chromatography techniques
  • Passion for streamlining process workflows and automation of paperwork
  • Experience in or exposure to engineering development to automate workflow steps, reduce hands-on time and improve uniformity
