Staff Mechanical Engineer

Redmond, WA

This company is a leader in MEMS based solid state automotive lidar for advanced driver safety (ADAS) and autonomous driving sensor and micro-display technology for augmented reality is the pioneer and creator of PicoP® scanning technology, an ultra-miniature laser projection and sensing solution based on the laser beam scanning methodology.  The technology is well suited to support a wide array of applications including interactive projection, robotics, and industrial applications, and Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). The company is an independently recognized leader for its formidable intellectual property portfolio. The company is based in Redmond, Washington and is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer for a full-time, direct role.

As a key member, you will work directly with the company optical design engineers, as well as the MEMS, and electrical engineering teams. This position will provide mechanical hardware analysis, design and development for small laser beam scanning display products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical and Opto-mechanical design of lidar products, and MEMS based scanner packaging, from requirements and architecture definition, through concept development and design to manufacturing of high-volume products, ensuring new products meet the performance, quality, reliability, manufacturability, and COGS goals.
  • NPI line development, working on alignment machine bring-up, process development, and characterization.
  • Hands-on participation in prototype build activities, testing, and analysis, and test fixture development for proof of concept activities as well as product reliability testing.
  • Generation and review of technical documentation (specifications, drawings, assembly instructions, test plans).
  • Reporting and presentation of data in progress and design reviews.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient using SolidWorks.
  • Experience with common manufacturing & design processes such as: sheet metal, plastic injection molding, machining, fabrication of glass and plastic optics, flexible PCBA, and adhesives.
  • Experience working with overseas suppliers and contract manufacturers, assisting with build activities including line setup, process development, part and machine qualification.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods.
  • Solid communication and problem solving skills, ability to understand complex systems and ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.

Required Experience

  • 5+ years relevant experience in new product design and development.
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with MEMS (scanning, accelerometers, etc).
  • Experience with micro-assembly automation and high volume product design
  • Mechanical analysis or modeling experience
  • Hands on experience with optical and opto-mechanical hardware and test equipment.
  • Experience with laser based systems.
