Position:  Approval Agency Test Engineer

Location: Lisle, IL

Status: 12 month contract

Our client in the electronics component manufacturing industry is seeking an experienced Approval Agency Test Engineer for a 12 month contract opportunity.   This role performs complex product safety analysis and submittals to the safety agencies to obtain and maintain requested product safety certification.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • With minimal supervision, perform complex product safety analysis and submittals to the safety agencies to obtain and maintain requested product safety certification. Develop required correspondence to obtain the desired approvals and certification. Manage the coordination and approval process with safety agency personnel as required.
  • Develop, set up, and conduct complex approval agency and product tests. Record data, prepare charts, graphs, and issue formal reports. Develop and maintain proficiency in test procedures for applicable safety standards.
  • Using engineering experience, analyze product test results and perform failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) as required. Develop and provide recommendations to Engineering and Product Management for corrective action and failure mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor agency specifications, bulletins, and proposed or actual changes to product safety standards, and analyze potential impact on the ability to obtain and maintain product safety certifications worldwide.  Provide guidance and recommendations to Product Management and Engineering on product design, ratings, and testing strategies to obtain/maintain safety certifications while minimizing cost and interval. Keep management informed of any pertinent developments that may impact business cases. 
  • Consult with customers, Engineering, Sales, and Marketing on approval agency issues and inquiries. Develop and provide product design requirements and product safety evaluation strategies to minimize testing and certification costs, certification time intervals, and ongoing costs of product certification maintenance.
  • Using engineering experience, analyze product safety approval submittals to provide required ratings and technical content while minimizing required testing, cost, and project completion interval. 
  • Monitor and regularly review and compare approval agency quotes, costs, quality, response times, and processing intervals. Provide periodic performance feedback to approval agencies. Develop proposals to minimize and control costs and intervals while maximizing quality.
  • Work with internal and external entities to reduce the cost of Approval Agency services and to improve internal efficiencies and related processes.
  • Review agency files and reports for accuracy of product information and attributes, than approve. Provide corrective action as required. Maintain approval agency product database.
  • Issue regular weekly and monthly project status reports.
  • Work with Agency Inspectors and auditors on their visits to corporate headquarters.  When necessary, provide direction to and utilize the support of Approval Agency Liaison personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Job Scope:

  • Accountable for Approval Agency (safety certification) project requests for all divisions worldwide. Handles routine and complex certification projects. 
  • Processes safety certification projects for all existing product lines and all new product lines as requested by Engineering or Project Management for offices worldwide.
  • Accountable for assisting all manufacturing sites worldwide in the timely resolution of Approval Agency compliance issues and in maintaining product flow from an Approval Agency compliance perspective.  Impact on ability to ship product and product recall avoidance.
  • Works with minimal supervision. Coordinates with supervisor on business strategies for both routine and complex projects.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with project work related to UL, CSA, FCC, CE, etc.   
  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years professional experience in an approval agency liaison position.
  • Experience with indirect supervision of technical test staff and administrative staff.
  • Experience as a product design engineer.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and monitor work load.
  • Strong verbal and written communications. Able to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.
  • Strong organizational skills to monitor and follow-up on projects submitted to the agencies as well as communicate status of projects to the submitters.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite, intermediate knowledge of MS Word and Excel applications.
  • Experience in the operation of electrical/electronic test equipment.
  • Experience in the operation of environmental/mechanical test equipment.
  • Experience in technical presentations to internal disciplines and external customers.
  • Proficiency with development of Microsoft Access database management & reporting tools.
