Volt Workforce Solutions is actively recruiting for a Full-Time Machine Shop Manager, located in Costa Mesa, CA. 

Job Summary:

Under administrative direction from Machine Shop Manager, manages daily machine shop operations and performs other duties, as assigned.

Will Support Machine Shop Manager in the Following Responsibilities:

• Directly supervises daily manufacturing and insures work orders follow schedule

• Approves maintenance requests

• Schedules machine downtime from production for maintenance work

• Assigns or makes changes in job responsibilities for all supervisors and lead persons

• Trains supervisors and lead persons to improve their managerial abilities

• Evaluates and approves engineering change orders relative to manufactured parts

• Reads all evaluations and corrects them if necessary

• Works with material review board to assist in disposition of material with questionable quality

• Administers policies and procedures relative to machining personnel, and Environmental, Health and Safety

• Hires and disciplines supervisors and machine shop personnel

• Regular punctuality, attendance, and absence reporting in conformance with company policies is essential to the successful performance of this position

• Fully comply with company rules, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure safe and effective operations

Qualifications Guideline

Any combination equivalent of, but not limited to, the following:


  • Broad experience in machine shop management
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Considerable knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques in manufacturing and environment; experience in budgeting practices
  • Considerable training and experience in mechanics and machining applications
  • Experience in computer terminal application and operation
  • Training in hiring, discipline, personnel evaluation, and termination practices
  • Training in affirmative action plans and principles


• Considerable knowledge and understanding of machining practices and the mechanics involved

• Capacity to evaluate, in writing or verbally, others’ abilities and productivity

• Ability to communicate effectively with management, supervision, employees, sales, quality, vendors, and contractors

• Broad knowledge of manufacturing systems and use of computers

• Must be able to formulate changes in manufacturing processes or justify changes in equipment to affect those processes

• Ability to lead, develop, prioritize, and delegate work

• Experience in setting up and running VTL, CNC Milling / Turning and Mill-Turn machines

• Knowledge on cutting properties of the machining cutters and inserts for selection of right tools/inserts for the machining operations based on the component material, hardness & drawing tolerances

• Requires knowledge on fixturing concepts for CNC milling/lathe & for conventional machining processes

• Requires a strong background in CNC Programming and troubleshooting for 2-5 Axis CNC Machining Centers and Turning Centers

• Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing concept and Coordinate Measuring Machine inspections

• Broad knowledge of CNC program code

• Familiar with hydraulic fixtures working mechanism and troubleshooting, cutting tools, speeds & feeds

• Ability to identify tooling solutions best suited for each process to reduce cost per component

• Requires knowledge in cost estimation for the manufacturing process. (Machine hour rate, part process cost etc.)

• Experience in implementing automation systems where appropriate to improve productivity and reduce labor expenses

• Familiar with the use of automated vision systems and optical metrology equipment for dimensional inspection of machined parts

• Ability to identify wastes and implement cost out opportunities within machine shop manufacturing processes

• Must be able to read, understand, and interpret technical data

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle and travel to various company locations

• Ability to lift, move, and carry tools and materials weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted

• Lifting, moving, or carrying tools and materials weighing over 25 pounds requires assistance by a co-worker or lifting equipment

• Ability to stretch, bend and reach work areas

• Ability to perform essential functions of the job, as defined
