Audio Noise Cancelation Consultant

6-month Contract

This opportunity is with a global supplier of dependable and precise products including hearing aid components, MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) microphones, specialty components and advanced micro-acoustic solutions for the mobile consumer electronics, medical technology and other consumer and industrial end markets.

The consultant will assist in a project to investigate, and improve the performance of ANC systems in true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones at low frequencies (below 200 Hz).

The goal of the project is to build the theoretical and practical basis to minimize the penalty of venting headsets.  The consultant will help in creating at least one wired ANC headset using BA where ANC performance is comparable to high quality commercial designs.

The company will build custom headsets, and provide lab facilities and testing to verify any proposed solutions.    We have been studying ANC for some time already.  They have built working headsets, have developed an ANC spice model, and have characterized typical leaks in earphones.

If the project is successful, there is also a potential future research project to study ways of reducing the phase shift of BA headsets in the 2 to 4 kHz range, through either headset modification, improved loop filter design strategy, or transducer modifications.


  • Work closely under the guidance, supervision and direction of experienced engineers and researchers
  • Refine existing models and simulate using tools and validate the performance of prototypes using acoustic measurement equipment.
  • Work with engineers to validate acoustic modeling and simulations. Characterize and optimize component designs to achieve target electro-acoustic performance.
  • Under the guidance of senior engineers, support electro-acoustic measurements and simulations in customer application platform.


  • Understanding of acoustic and related measurement parameters such as SNR, THD, sensitivity.
  • Good understanding of feedback system stability & modeling, dynamic range control, headset acoustics, digital signal processing and filter design. 
  • Experience working with popular ANC chip sets would be considered as a plus 
  • Familiar with lumped element modeling such as Spice.
  • Experience in working with modeling software tools such as LTSpice, MATLAB, MATHCAD, ANSYS, COMSOL.
  • Experience in semiconductor packaging and PCB will be considered as a plus.
  • General electronic design principles of analog and digital circuits, including filter theory
  • Design of experiments, rigorous scientific method
  • Debugging and troubleshooting of experiments
  • Works independently with limited supervision
  • Good technical communication skills, including using MS Office tools


  • Knowledge of psychoacoustics
  • Knowledge of underlying principles of transducers, including microphones and speakers
  • Signal processing in frequency and time domain
  • Building of small mechanical or electronic devices
  • Mechanical design, CAD experience, esp. using Creo
  • Experience using and/or designing audio equipment such as recording equipment, sound reinforcement equipment, hearing aids
