Position:        Biologist (5-7 years)

Location:       Indianapolis, IN

Status:           Contract

Volt is seeking experienced Biologists for one of our clients in Indianapolis, IN.

The right candidate will have not only the relevant work experience as outlined below, but also who is able to think critically, solve problems, and understands the science behind the experiments that you are running. This role will often not have SOPs but rather will be designing the experiments with your manager and running them together. To add value to this role the right candidate will be able to think freely, work independently, have experience in designing experiments and demonstrate the required critical thinking an problem solving skills.

 Job Duties:

  • Use broad knowledge of microbiological sciences and genetics to improve industrial Streptomyces strains and develop a deeper understanding of natural product biosynthesis during fermentation of various Streptomyces species.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities through data collection, mining, observation and technical report writing in collaboration with senior scientists and technicians.
  • Ensure all experiments are well designed and documented with clear objectives.
  • Technically design and execute genetic engineering experiments.
  • Aseptically work with different bacteria.
  • Manage small-scale fermentation and additional laboratory projects, as required.
  • Responsible for mentoring, training and scientific development of junior scientist and technicians through sharing best practices on laboratory operations, reviewing technical data and information.
  • Accurately document work in electronic notebook and/or batch records.
  • Write and present technical summaries in reports and at department technical meetings and reviews.
  • Collaborate technically with scientist in supported manufacturing areas sharing key learnings.
  • DNA sequence analysis skills. Hands on experience with Streptomyces genetics, cell biology and/or physiology, including but not limited to, S. aureofaciens and S. cinnamonensis.
  • Hands on experience with small-scale fermentation and high throughput screening
  • Prior experience and knowledge of fermentation manufacturing and/or development.
  • Previous statistical background e.g., experimental data analysis and interpretation.
  • Success mindedness with a desire to develop scientifically.
  • Experience of a passion for science and creativity in adaptation/modification of existing techniques for novel uses.
  • Technically inquisitive, attentive to detail and must demonstrate good problem solving skills.
  • High learning agility.
  • Able to multitask and be able to prioritize activities.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and collaboratively with others.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • The candidate should be acquainted with basic statistics and be proficient with the use of JMP, Microsoft Office, VectorNTI or similar software.
  • Utilize safe laboratory practices and encourage safe behaviors by coworkers.


  • HS diploma or equivalent
  • BS in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry or a related major AND 5+ years POST academic LAB experience in microbiology or genetic engineering OR MS in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry or a related major AND 5+ years academic LAB experience in microbiology or genetic engineering (experience counted MUST BE IN THE LAB). 
  • PCR AND PCR troubleshooting (must have the troubleshooting experience). 
  • Primer design experience
  • DNA Cloning AND design experiment for DNA cloning
  • Experience in aseptic technique
