Volt Workforce Solutions is partnering with an industry leader of high tech quality water manufacturing solutions for industrial industries.  This is a high level Director of Engineering for their Lincoln, Nebraska location.

Position Summary and Responsibilities


The Director of Engineering is a key member of the leadership team and directs and coordinates activities of the Engineering department, is the organization’s Champion of the organization’s Product/Service Development Process, participates in the formulation and administration of organizational policies and establishes annual and long range operational plans, budgets, and programs.

Responsible for the development and maintenance of World Class engineering strengths to support the business strategies within the frame work of a LEAN/Continuous Improvement environment. Responsible for development and training of engineers to assure that state of the art skills and core competencies are maintained in areas critical to the maintenance of sustainable competitive advantages in all product areas. Monitors newly emerging technologies which will have impact on future products and acquires these technologies in a timely fashion.

Provides strategic and technical leadership and oversight in the development and implementation of functional engineering best practices and in the planning and execution of product and technology development.   Works in partnership with Operations, Sales/Marketing and Service departments in support of quality products/services that exceed our customer expectations.  Works with Operations as it relates to ensuring product/service design is aligned with Operations and vendors capabilities to produce product in a LEAN/Continuous Improvement environment. 

Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to prepare and deliver effective communications/presentations to customers and the internal organization, negotiate successfully, and positively influence the Engineering staff and all those involved in the organization’s Product/Service Development Process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director of Engineering performs the following duties personally or through delegation.   All these duties and responsibilities are performed in a personal and management style consistent with the operating principles of Isco.

  • As the senior management team champion for the company wide product/service development process ensure that the process is aligned to support the below listed objectives, act as the advocate throughout the organization for embracing and adhering to the process and leads the engineering department in driving and supporting the process.

    • Process is consistent with clients objectives and plans, with the desired results being satisfied customers (resulting from bug-free products which delight users for the many years the customers owns the products), responsiveness to rapidly changing customers’ needs and competitive pressures,  high product quality, innovative products which satisfy customers’ needs, product designed for manufacturability in a LEAN environment and product costs consistent with margin objectives and competitive market pricing.

  • Develop strategic planning for the direction and control of product development activities.

  • Formulate long-term objectives and standards of performance for the department.

  • Assure that department achieves objectives and project completion within budget and time frame.

  • Ensure adherence to design engineering standards across the engineering disciplines and product lines.

  • Motivate staff and provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on management, recognizing the role as that of both manager and support resource / mentor.

  • Facilitates continuous improvement in Engineering departments design practices and processes.

  • Assure that product is designed for specific needs, but with wider applications in mind.

  • Hire and direct staff to meet scheduled commitments.

  • Maintains product quality and conformity with product specifications by establishing an effective product design quality program that is aligned with manufacturing’s ability to produce high quality products that meet customer expectations on long-term quality products (i.e., exceed customers expectation on the cost of ownership for the live of the product)

  • Maintains a safe work environment by establishing and enforcing appropriate safety standards with the assistance of Isco’s Environmental Health and Safety Officer.

  • Maintains Isco’s position as a responsible corporate citizen by ensuring that all operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, federal, and international regulations and laws governing business operations.

  • Assists in the achievement of Isco’s overall goals by performing other related duties that may be assigned.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  A bachelor’s degree (EE preferred) with an MBA desired and at least 10 years of engineering experience with product design and development and 4-7 years of experience in a management role.  Experience in the development of complex instrumentation type products with high software, mechanical, and electronic content desired.

Knowledge of regulatory requirements, such as CE Mark, FCC regulations, design for hazardous locations is desirable.  Familiarity with the water pollution monitoring and control market and/or the laboratory-scale separation science market desirable.

MANAGEMENT ABILITIES:  Must possess a demonstrated ability to motivate and manage staff and associates to achieve high levels of performance.   and counseling.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:  Use of tools such as tolerance stacking, FMEA & DVP&R that focus on robustness of design.  Knowledge of current U.S. water environmental regulations, wastewater treatment methods, biochemistry, and/or analytical chemistry desirable.
