Job Description

In order to support new business growth and maximize operational excellence, Our client intends to hire a Director of Operations. This position is primarily responsible for all the new growth programs which are on an aggressive ramp plan for the next few years. Increasing throughput and reducing cost will be of paramount importance. This position will report directly to the COO and will be based at the company’s facility in Burbank, CA.

SCOPE:

The Director of Operations will be responsible for the operations organization of approximately 70 employees in a union environment, and will have 4 direct reports with the following functional responsibilities:

  • Assembly Operations: Responsible for all assembly/welding operations. Instill the culture of visual material flow and standard work. Maintain the required safety stock buffers to ensure 100% OTD.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement activities through the Manufacturing Engineering team to improve Quality and reduce cost.
  • Supervision: Lead a team of approximately 100 individuals (7 Direct reports) and drive a high-performance culture.
  • Manufacturing Engineering: Problem solving, fixture and die design, drivers of cost and process improvements.
  • Planning/Scheduling: Responsible for router accuracy and utilizing a pull system to driven by production demand.

MISSION:

The Director of Operations will be responsible for leading and improving the flow line production through the application of lean principles and standard work development. He / She will lead the organizational growth while reducing costs and inventory to ensure continued strong financial performance.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

To achieve the mission for this position, the Director of Operations will produce the following critical actions and results:

  1. Manufacturing Vision:  Develop and execute a long-term manufacturing vision for the future of the company that supports company growth goals and provides strategic direction on manufacturing processes, manufacturing technology, and operational core competencies. This vision must address the following areas to better position the organization for success in operational excellence and future programs:

  1. On Time Delivery: Improve on time delivery performance to goal levels.  Improve coordination and forecasting between the internal fabrication shop and the assembly production line to eliminate delivery and timing issues between groups. Develop standard processes within the organizations, and once implemented, ensure all Operations employees are strictly following all procedures.  Work with the Managers to ensure their focus on on-time delivery performance, holding all employees accountable to their performance requirements through all projects.  This will include:
    1. Improving planning and scheduling processes between fabrication and the supply chain to ensure timely delivery of raw materials required for production.
    2. Increasing the functionality of the MRP System, ensuring it reflects accurate data and is being used efficiently.
    3. Ensure increased communication and coordination between the Assembly and fabrication.
    4. Consistently monitor on-time delivery performance and schedule to address issues as soon as they arise, reducing their effect on delivery performance.
    5. Improve flow line production and build up finished goods inventory to strategic levels.

  1. Inventory Reduction:  Drive manufacturing velocity and improve planning to increase inventory turns and reduce inventory and WIP. Streamline the value stream and work flow to reduce Days to Manufacture and reduce lead-time as manufacturing velocity increases, leading to inventory reduction. 

  1. Cost:  Drive efficient processes and best practices within the Operations group to reduce costs, specifically in labor and material variances.  Develop tight families of like parts to create repeatability within the team and establish standard work processes to minimize waste.  Foster greater buy-in to the manufacturing vision of the Operations group from the team and implement training programs to increase team retention and capability.  Hold the Operations Managers and team accountable to compliance with standard work and create a lean culture.

  1. Safety:  Serve as the Operations group champion for safety, ensuring a proper safety culture and processes are instilled throughout the organization. Review current safety processes and procedures, making improvements and scheduling trainings where necessary to increase operational safety and workplace cleanliness.  Work with Managers to incorporate a safety focus and culture within their groups.  If an injury occurs, ensure proper processes are in place to identify root cause and take corrective actions immediately.  Focus on ensuring all personnel are instilled with a safety culture of the highest order and accountability for the safety of themselves and others.

  1. Organizational Development:  Develop the organization to its full potential and keep personnel motivated and productive. Assess the organization and conduct training and succession planning where needed.  Instill and drive a lean culture that drives continuous improvement.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:

The success of the Director of Operations in achieving the objectives described above will be measured by the following:

  • Manufacturing vision that supports company growth goals and addresses operational improvements for the future is developed, implemented into the organization, and has gained buy-in from the work force.
  • Achievement of the established cost targets.
  • On time delivery is at 100% and customers are satisfied with performance.
  • Inventory levels are reduced and by use of an effective pull system.
  • Safety processes are properly implemented within the group.
  • The organization is developed to its full potential and talent is improved, with capacity and capability to accomplish the company’s strategic goals.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will have the following education, work history, knowledge and skills.

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in Mechanical.  MS or MBA degree is highly desirable.

Skills & Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience managing large manufacturing shops with proven leadership and a proven track record of driving change and implementing lean principles. 
  • Must be currently managing 100+ employees
  • Aerospace production experience is preferred. 
  • Experience with a high-volume manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Mix of experience managing and transforming culture in large assembly operations.
  • Career progression with progressively more responsible roles within production operations.
  • Lean / Continuous Improvement trained.
  • Experience with and oriented toward metrics in business analysis.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills are mandatory.
