Job Description

The Director of Quality is an experienced executive who has generated significant impact through the strategic and tactical direction of both quality control and quality assurance. This position will direct and develop manager-level department heads in Quality Compliance, Quality Inspection and Quality Assurance.  This position will report directly to the VP/GM and will serve as a member of the executive team.  There are approximately 25 employees in the Quality department consisting of Managers, Supervisors, Engineers, Inspectors, Technicians, and Systems. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Individuals must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily in addition to the following and all other duties as may be assigned:

  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, directs and evaluates the organization's quality compliance function and performance.
  • Strategic planning and execution to enhance profitability, productivity and efficiency throughout the operations of quality control, quality assurance and quality compliance.
  • Develops, implements and manages quality control systems designed to ensure continuous production consistent with established standards, customer specifications and production goals. The position supervises a team in quality control, quality assurance and quality compliance.
  • This position uses knowledge of regulatory requirements to assess, document and make recommendations for the quality and correction of manufactured products.
  • Implement improved processes and management methods to generate higher ROI and workflow optimization.
  • Interact regularly with executive team and individual department heads to ensure company’s operational priorities are aligned with company direction.
  • Continually investigate and introduce process improvement measures and presents suggestions to VP/GM for consideration.
  • Participate in vendor negotiations to ensure product relevance and cost-efficiency.

To achieve the mission for this position, the Director of Quality will produce the following critical actions and results:

Develop and execute a long-term quality vision for the future of the company that supports company growth goals and provides strategic direction on quality processes, technology, and core competencies. This vision must address the following areas to better position the organization for success in manufacturing excellence and future programs:

  1. Robust Quality System: Review processes and procedures and act as a mentor to other departments to ensure that a robust Quality System is in place
  2. Quality Control: Ensure that the Quality Plans are adequate and effective; utilize technology to improve detection & reduce inspection cycle times
  3. Reduce rework and scrap: Ensure that the Quality Engineers are effectively facilitating rework and scrap reduction using data/trends
  4. Agency & Customer Audits: Implement a robust internal audit plan and manage all external audits
  5. Engineering Changes: Liaison with Engineering and Production and improve the effectiveness of the Customer Engineering Change Process
  6. Contract Review and Flow-down: Ensure that the Quality clauses are adequately reviewed for new contracts and that adequate information is flowed down to the vendors
  7. Supplier Quality Management: Drive Quality improvements/accountability across the supply base in collaboration with Purchasing
  8. Continuous Improvement: Foster a continuous improvement culture in the organization and drive actions to reduce cost of poor Quality
  9. Customer Returns: Ensure that customer returns are adequately handled and turned around in an expeditious manner. Drive actions to reduce customer returns.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will have the following education, work history, knowledge and skills.

Education:  Bachelor’s degree; Graduate degree a plus

Skills & Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience leading quality groups and proven hands on leadership.  A proven track record of driving change and implementing quality principles. 
  • Must be currently responsible for quality organization for medium size manufacturing company.
  • Aerospace experience is required. 
  • Experience with a high mix, low volume manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Mix of experience with quality inspection, quality process, supplier quality, and quality assurance.
  • Career progression with progressively more responsible roles within quality.
  • Lean / Continuous Improvement trained and certified a plus.
  • Experience with and oriented toward metrics in business analysis.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills are mandatory.
