Job Description

Volt Workforce Solutions has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Software Solutions, located in Eden Prairie, MN.

Primary Objective:

Lead control systems software team that is critical to ensuring we deliver and maintain the best control systems software for our customers.  Responsible for architecture, development, test, release and support of real-time control software and customer-facing applications for clientsTest Systems products.

Major Areas of Accountability:

           PEOPLE

  • Inspire, lead, recruit, hire, train, and mentor multiple teams of software engineers.
  • Create an inclusive, positive work environment where people are motivated to do their best to help the organization achieve its objectives.
  • Foster collaboration between teams and drive consistency across them.
  • Demonstrate strong and effective inter-personal and communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of clients and staff.
  • Provide oversight, guidance and review of work performed by others.
  • Conduct reviews, track individual's goals, participate in performance calibration sessions, and manage compensation.

    MANAGEMENT

  • Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks and make performance-related recommendations (hardware, software, and configuration).
  • Ensure software development initiatives deliver on expectations—functionality, timeliness, and cost.
  • Anticipate operational, program, and implementation issues and develop preventative measures.
  • Adapt projects, programs or methods based on customer or business partner feedback.
  • Manage all development processes, including iteration management, quality control, and user experience.
  • Apply proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and best practices to guide the development team on issues related to the design, development, and deployment of mission-critical software systems. 
  • Oversee teams that develop code, understand/influence/ mentor/enforce coding standards and best practices.
  • Develop relevant metrics for software development and use as a basis for communication and continuous improvement. 
  • Define strategic staffing plans based on projected demand making use of external vendor partner capacity where applicable.

    VISION/STRATEGY

  • Provide strategic, tactical, and functional analysis and direction relative to all software engineering activities (i.e., software, testing, and build/release).
  • Advocate, evangelize, and implement modern software engineering & agile best practices.
  • Build, enhance and maintain software technologies that enable rapid innovation and are inspired by customers.
  • Help translate business requirements into technical needs and actions.
  • Communicate about technical, as well as strategic concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ensure a strong customer service focus across the software engineering team.
  • Build a reliable network of vendor partners, both onshore and offshore and utilize vendor partners to optimize software development services.
  • Bring innovative best practice to all areas of software engineering.
  • Keep abreast of new technology and market developments.
  • Create systems engineering mindset, drive consistency in architecture, processes, design documentation and tools across the product portfolio.
  • Drive simplification initiatives aimed at improving engineering efficiency, quality and development cycle time.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related degree.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering large scale software releases while working on multiple projects simultaneously, balancing resources, timing and quality of outcomes.
  • Strong program management experience.
  • Understanding of verification and validation processes.
  • Strong knowledge of software development methodologies and related tools.
  • Experience driving agile software development processes.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and domain experience.
  • Experience leading global teams within a matrix organization.
  • Extensive experience in organization design and workforce planning, budget planning, and vendor management.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others.
  • Proven ability to drive change and partner with global teams.
  • Responsive and willing to take ownership of issues and drive solutions.
  • Self-starter, energizing, results oriented, and decisive.
  • Creative problem solver and solution developer when presented with conflicting requirements, business demands and technical risks/issues.
  • Ability and willingness up to travel 20% both domestic and international.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master’s Degree and/or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related degree
  • 7+ years of software/controls experience.
