Electrician Technician

Temp to Hire

Pay range: $28-$34/hour

Night Shift: 6 pm to 2:30 am (availability nights, weekends, holidays)

  2. Some type of formal training in electronics, industrial controls or related field, from a 2 year college or other technical training

GENERAL SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide electrical maintenance support to all areas of production.  Maintain and repair a broad scope of machinery and equipment.  Analyze problems, implement solutions, and fabricate assemblies as needed to ensure timely repairs and a smooth running operation.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  1. Install, maintain, and repair wiring and devices relating to newspaper press controls, press drives, and press sub-systems to the sub-assembly/component level.
  2. Install, maintain, and repair wiring and devices relating to newspaper packaging devices such as inserters, stackers, strappers, and bottom-wraps to the sub-assembly/component level.
  3. Install, maintain, and repair wiring and devices relating to conveyance of product such as the tray, rollertop, slat-top, waste conveyor and gripper conveyors to the sub-assembly/component level.
  4. Install, maintain, and repair electrical conduit and wiring for building electrical distribution. 
  5. Maintain a thorough working knowledge of code requirements relative to conduit work, wiring specification, and compliance matters.
  6. Install, maintain, and repair lighting fixtures and circuits.
  7. Install, maintain, and repair motor controls, transformers, and switchgear.
  8. Install, maintain, and repair industrial duty lead acid batteries.
  9. Install, maintain, and repair small and large AC and DC motors.
  10. Install, maintain, and repair battery operated devices such as pallet trucks and forklifts to the sub-assembly/component level.
  11. Work with contractors, engineers, and vendors regarding the upgrade and/or installation of electrical equipment.
  12. Design, build, and install circuitry to enhance or improve system operation or productivity.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1.         Maintain a clean, professional, and safe work area.  Requires some housekeeping.

2.         Use a personal computer for record keeping and communication between shifts.

  1. Clean parts for disassembly and/or assembly and repairs.
  2. Work with stock room to ensure proper record keeping of parts and their use.
  3. Perform such special projects or other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education:                                          

High School Diploma or GED. Completion of a Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship or acceptable equivalent experience. Computer literacy and ability to clearly communicate information, both verbal and written.

Experience:                                        

Minimum two years experience as a journey-level electrician. Experience in newspapers or similar work preferred.

Skills & Abilities:                               

Strong mechanical aptitude is necessary to be successful.  Ability to analyze and solve problems.  Physical ability to carry tools and/or parts up several flights of ladders to the top of the presses required.  Physical ability to work from personnel lifts.

Contact with Others:                          

Interact effectively with employees from other departments and follow or direct others in proper response. Must often work with others in confined spaces. 

Work Direction over Others:              

Limited direction of others with less experience or those who are in a support roll.  Must be able to pass on to others knowledge gained by training or experience.

Supervision Received:                        

Must be able to follow directions when given by supervisor.  However, often required to take on tasks and see them to completion and recorded without direct supervision.

Pressure of Work:                               

Constant deadlines. Every effort must be made to keep equipment running. If a failure occurs, the problem must be fixed ASAP, while maintaining a professional attitude.

Scope:                                                

Often faced with more than one task; must make decisions as to which comes first.  Prioritize tasks and proceed to accomplish with minimum down time and impact on production.

Impact:                                               

The care and condition of equipment is at risk and must be protected.  Poor maintenance could result in down time, which results in loss of income from advertisers and subscribers (which can be permanent).

Working Conditions:                          

Every effort is made to ensure a safe, professional work place. However, it is often necessary to carry objects, tools, etc., to work in confined areas covered with ink and dirt. Environment includes paper dust, moving equipment and noise.
