Mechanical Engineer (12-month contract) $26/hr.  St. Paul, MN

Volt has partnered with a growing manufacturing company in search of a Mechanical Engineer! In this role, the resource will have key responsibility for development and optimization of several processes for the manufacture, evaluation and analysis of nanoparticle/film composite electrodes, nanoparticle dispersions/suspensions, and ion conducting polymers.  These processes include membrane oxygen permeability test capability development, fuel cell test methods, and ex-situ characterization.   Responsibilities will include the setup, calibration and optimization of new equipment for thin film gas permeability.

Responsibilities:

1. Setup and calibrate the Illinois Instruments Oxtran. Permeability tester for ion exchange membrane evaluation and develop a standard operating procedure for material preparation, test operation, and data analysis. Manage experimental material and part generation for testing using this unit.  Provide biweekly feedback and quarterly reports.
2. Evaluating ionomers, catalysts, composite electrodes, and catalyst coated membranes through methods including electrochemical oxygen permeability testing, fuel cell test evaluations and ex-situ methods including SEM and XRD.
3. Provide analysis of ionomer characteristics influencing catalyst, electrode and fuel cell performance and durability.
4. Manufacture, test and analyze samples of nanoparticle/film composite FUEL CELL electrodes. Testing includes fuel cell test stand evaluation, cyclic voltammetry, oxygen permeability testing and optical microscopy.

Qualifications:

•          A chemistry, engineering or materials scientist undergraduate degree

•          Experience in a laboratory setting

•          Fluency in Excel, Powerpoint, Word

•          Experience designing, managing and executing experiments

Preferred Qualifications:

•          Familiarity with roll-to-roll continuous processing of films, including solution coating and/or drying.

•  Familiarity with electrochemistry and fuel cells, including experience in fuel cell and potentiostat and characterization techniques.

•  Significant experience in conducting routine data analysis and reporting of material functional test results, including use of Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint and/or OriginLab Origin. 

•  Familiarity with polymer processing and characterization, including coating, drying, annealing.

•  Experience in building, altering, maintaining and/or calibrating precision equipment including mass flow controllers, thermal sensors, and pumps.

•  Experience with composite film characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, XRF, gas permeability and conductivity measurements.
