Job Description

Volt has partnered with a leader in the medical devices industry in Menlo Park to find their next Sr. Failure Analysis Engineer.

The Senior Failure Analysis Engineer will provide timely, thorough and accurate root-cause analysis of the functional electrical and mechanical characteristics of the contact hearing device to determine the cause of failure.

The position requires hands-on microscope and micro-manipulation skills and experience to identify and report findings and a thorough background knowledge of various metallic and non-metallic materials and various adhesives as well as electro-mechanisms, photonics and electromagnetic devices.

This position is part of R&D engineering group and additional activities will include support of new product development, especially as it relates to development of verification, validation, environmental and accelerated stress testing (HALT and HASS).

  • Analyze field failures to understand the failure mechanism and root cause.
  • Work with the cross-functional team to take field failures from root cause identification through to corrective action.
  • Document field issues in detail to support root cause analysis. Create management reports based on findings.
  • Understand the manufacturing process and close gaps that can result in customer failures.
  • Establish optimized root cause failure analysis techniques and processes.
  • Work with R&D engineers on validation and reliability testing of new products.
  • Management of FA schedules and updates.
  • Tracking and reporting of RMA/FA metrics.

The selected candidate should have:

  • BS or higher in mechanical or electrical engineering or related field with 5+ years of professional experience.
  • Solid understanding of and experience in applying problem-solving tools including root cause analysis, statistical tools and processes, and design of experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating, qualifying and managing failure analysis to ensure timely, complete and thorough analysis.
  • Must have excellent micro-manipulation manual hand skills to handle and dissect extremely delicate miniature assemblies under a microscope.
  • Must be able to operate (or learn to operate) various types of test equipment including laser doppler vibrometers, multimeters, computer-based test systems, microbalances and a variety of custom test equipment.
  • Must be able to develop verification, validation, environmental and accelerated stress testing (HALT and HASS) for new product development.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently
