Job Description

Field Staking Technician/Designer

Volt is seeking a Staking Technician to inspect, survey, and stake electric distribution lines in accordance with construction specifications; prepare work orders for construction, and help with research in necessary permits and easements. This position involves both field and office work. Ability to work with the public and function in all types of outside weather conditions.  It is estimated that this role will spend 35% of the time in the field and 65% of the time in the office.

Essential Duties

  • To perform the inspection of poles on client electrical system and create automated or manual staking sheets of the components that need to be replaced, or where trees, underbrush or other encumbrances exist that pose a risk to distribution infrastructure.
  • Maintains electric infrastructure by investigating, surveying, and staking service & powerline upgrades and system improvements
  • Taking notes from the field and inputting/altering designs in Schneider Electric Designer tool
  • Assists Program Manager and Design Leads by providing written information of job location and design for the building or upgrading of power lines
  • Utilizes pen tablet, laser range finders, and staking software to stake and prepare staking sheets for the construction of new lines, line upgrades and line maintenance
  • Ensures jobs are staked on time, with few errors, and according to the available specifications and safety standards
  • Designs work orders and identifies design flaws
  • Identifies and implements ways to improve staking and design practices
  • Researches and acquires right-of-way permits and easements necessary for the construction of work orders
  • Communicates with all parties involved through letters, emails, onsite visits and phone calls to obtain needed easements
  • Provides additional input and contact as needed with construction crews to assure job proceeds smoothly
  • Assist with special projects as needed. Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of Electrical theory, principles and practices relating to electric distribution engineering; land use requirements for obtaining permits and rights-of-way; overhead distribution construction standards, techniques, methods, equipment and material; utility policies and practices; National Electric Safety Code; personal computers, spreadsheets, word processors, and databases.  Ability to read electric distribution line maps, joint use design and civil engineering drawings related to utility systems. 
  • Ability to analyze and explain construction requirements, identify pole attachments and violations, read, and understand state, national and federal codes and regulations, communicate and work effectively with other people, organize and lead work, and use originality, innovation and sound judgement.
  • Two-year technical degree in mechanical/electrical/civil engineering or project management, or a minimum of 5 years in the design or construction of electric, gas or related utility/communication
  • Good communications skills needed for interactions with internal and external customers
  • Must have computer skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel programs
  • Experience with design software preferred.  Examples include: AutoCAD, SolidWorks or MicroStation
  • Experience in the utility or construction industry a plus
  • Two to Three years of Map Reading and/or surveying experience desiredStrong PC and technology experience required
