Energy Company seeking an immediate hire for Human Resource Manager /Labor Relations

Position: Human Resources Manager/ Labor Relations

Primary Reporting SVP, Operations and Engineering

Salary: 140+ Bonus

Location: Queens,NY

Summary: Oversee the day-to-day labor relations and human resources function and maintain a positive and productive work environment for a diverse union and non-union workforce at power generating stations located in Queens, Brooklyn and Tri State Area.

Maintain contact and relationship with local union representatives. Fully utilize the most cost-effective sources to identify talent for the company on an on-going basis. Manage recruiting, hiring, new hire orientation, training, employee and labor relations for their Queens, Brooklyn and Tri State area  locations.

Communicate and interpret HR policies and procedures and the collective bargaining agreement covering three quarters of the population. Provide employees and managers an objective place to discuss and resolve work related issues. Interact with all levels of management, union, external vendors, contractors and consultants.


• Provide primary support and guidance for day to day administration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and related policies and procedures, including grievance and arbitration procedure. Position functions as key member of plant management team and is heavily involved in CBA planning and negotiations.

• Provide sound advice and guidance to all plant managers and supervisors on human resource issues.

• Create and implement a recruitment strategy that effectively and efficiently addresses the hiring needs of all plant locations in

the New York metro area. Manage the recruiting process for entry level through senior level positions.

• Coordinate with the corporate HR team to generate offer letters, complete background checks and onboard new hires.

• Ensure the proper orientation and assimilation of all new employees into the organization. Interface regularly with corporate and plant staff on payroll and benefits issues.

• Manage and/or maintain relationships with external vendors (search and contingency firms, benefits, payroll, training, etc.); ensure necessary agreements and contracts are in place and cost effective where possible.

• Serve as on-site point person to handle questions regarding work related issues (salary, benefits, vacation, disability, etc.).

• Create and implement training for employees and managers as needed. Identify external training resources when they are needed to address a specific topic that requires in depth expertise that they do not have themselves.

• Coordinate Short Term Disability and Workers’ Compensation claims, working with EH&S, payroll, insurance carriers, and employees to ensure absenteeism and costs are tracked and attributed correctly. Contribute to Plant attendance management objectives.

• Work with station EH&S personnel to develop and maintain a system to track employee records of regulatory required environmental and safety training activities.

• Coordinate the performance management process and provide managers and employees with direction, coaching and support with the entire process.

• Coordinate the annual compensation review process and provide managers with direction and coaching as needed.

• Work with station management and training coordinator to develop an effective succession plan to ensure competences are maintained as employee’s turnover.


• Minimum of 5 -7 years of comprehensive Human Resources experience with an expertise in employee and labor relations, and working knowledge of all human resource functional areas, e.g. benefits, payroll, recruitment, compensation, applicable laws and compliance. A law degree for someone just graduating or has graduated for a year or two will be very beneficial.

• Previous experience in providing HR advice and counsel to a union and non-union employee population.

• Experience in the power industry a plus, prior plant experience highly desirable.

• Previous supervisory experience and demonstrated talent for managing the day-to-day HR activities that involve labor & employee relations, payroll & benefits administration, training and recruiting.

• Competent assessing and developing HR and Management policies as needed or required by circumstance. Understanding of human resources processes and ability to modify processes to meet changing needs.

• Excellent oral and written communications skills; strong presentation skills preferred

• Must be able to work in a team environment and influence others; demonstrate sound judgment, professional demeanor, high integrity, and self-confidence.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks is a must.

• Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of management.

• Must be computer literate with a general knowledge of human resources information systems to support payroll and benefits administration, in addition to working knowledge of Microsoft’s suite of office tools, notably Word and Excel.
