Job Description

Lab Assistant

12 month contract

Lisle, IL

The Lab Assistant will provide testing support for material, product development, validation and quality activities. Work closely with Engineering and other technicians to provide testing support in a timely manner to provide analysis and test results so that projects are completed as scheduled and objectives are achieved.

  • Performs mounting, sectioning, polishing and photographic/dimensional analysis of epoxy mounted specimens.
  • Experience with cross-sectioning to characterize materials, perform a failure analysis and expose an internal structure of a printed circuit board or an electronic component package.
  • Understanding of XRG analytical techniques; working knowledge of ASTM B568-98 and ISO3497:2000.
  • MFG-Coupon Cleaning & Weighing; RP-0775 and ASTM G-1 & G-4 for surface finishing and cleaning of weight-loss coupons.
  • Nitric acid porosity testing
  • Identify/interpret product defects (tin whisker, plating peel, PCB deformation, sample defects, etc.) utilizing microscopes, visual inspection and micro-sectioning analysis equipment.
  • FTIR techniques
  • Strong written and verbal communication and ability to author test reports for some or all of the above
  • Operating laboratory equipment such as band saw, grinders, sanders, cut-off wheels, polisher, metallurgical mounting presses, optical microscopes, imaging software, x-ray fluorescence and hardness testers.
  • Prepares samples for test and assemble test fixtures according to Koch methods and Best Practices.
  • Work closely with lab staff to improve sample preparation and testing procedures, demonstrating an ability to work independently and in a collaborative setting.
  • Use MS Office products for processing test results for reviews with Test Engineer and assist in resolving test problems.

Requirements:

Two (2) years of college training in a technical field or 3 or more years of hands on materials testing experience in a laboratory environment.

Qualifications:

• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and computer based file structures

• Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

• Strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
