Chemist/Materials Scientist (12-month contract) $20-24/hr. DOE
St. Paul, MN

Volt has partnered with a growing & innovative manufacturing company in search of a Chemist!


1. Development of new coating formulations towards meeting project specifications.  Task will involve identification of new coating formulation concepts, fabrication of laboratory-scale test samples (compound, coat, cure), coating property measurements, analysis of resultant data and assessment against specifications.
2. Conduct intellectual property review of proposed materials and formulations and generate art matrices.  Generate invention submissions, where appropriate.
3. Identify new coating formulation which meets specifications and is accepted by Project Manager; generate final manuscript report.


• An advanced degree Ph.D. or M.S. in Polymer chemistry, Organic chemistry, Material science, or related field. Experience with coating formulations highly desired. Minimum of 1 year of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

A chemist, or materials scientist is required with the following skills:
1. Demonstrated experience and knowledge on material development, synthetic chemistry, separation, and purification skills.
2. Demonstrated experience in formulation and coating fabrication and characterization, including Meyer rod coating, drop-casting, spray coating, spin coating and dip-coating.
3. Familiarity with surface characterization techniques, including contact angle measurement, durability test, and easy cleaning test.
4. Demonstrated experience in adhesion characterization, including peel test, water boiling adhesion test, adhesion under 80% humidity 80oC temperature test, overlap shear test.
5. Familiarity with characterization of coating optical and mechanical properties, including transmission and reflection spectroscopy, low refractive index test, anti-reflection test, durability test
6. Understanding of the theory and mechanism of adhesion on substrates.
7. Experience in conducting routine data analysis and reporting of material test results, including use of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
