Lab Technician II (12-month contract) Maplewood, MN


Volt has partnered with a growing manufacturing company in search of a Lab Technician! The successful candidate will have experience and interest working on laboratory scale and pilot scale processes and be able to execute experiments that relate key process variables to product responses. The candidate will operate in a team setting under the direction of engineers and lead technicians.

This position will provide the candidate with opportunities to utilize their mechanical and experimental skills to execute run plans that combine new material sets with specialized processing technology to create new and improved 3M products. Well-developed data recording, use of Excel spreadsheets, and communication skills are required as interfacing with controls systems and cross-functional teams will be prominent components of this job.


*Assist experimental and pilot-production set-up and running of roll-to-roll plasma processing equipment including: Learning new machine functions and operation: controls, sub-systems, procedures, and safety items; Precise equipment set-up and tear-down; Participating in experiment planning, running, data acquisition and observation; Participating in clean-up of systems and equipment between subsequent runs; Documenting run conditions and communicating results accurately; Perform testing of the product samples; Participate in machine and lab modification and maintenance including:
 - Vacuum plasma systems
 - Preventive maintenance activities
 - Troubleshooting and basic repairs
 - Maintaining lab including process equipment, cleanliness, and safe operations
 - Documenting all maintenance, equipment changes and repairs
 - Monitor variables during run for present values against set points


High school diploma/GED or higher.
Strong aptitude and passion for hands-on technical work, and willing to learn advanced processing and analytical equipment.
Good acumen for data processing, and use of Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two Year Technical or Associates Degree, or working towards one from an accredited university.
Intermediate computer knowledge including process control and data acquisition systems.
Strong technical and/or mechanical background including equipment modification.
Self-starter with hands-on approach to problem solving.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work well both in multi-disciplinary teams and independently.
Hands on experience assembling and operating laboratory, pilot, or manufacturing-scale process equipment.
