Job Description

Volt Design & Technical Services is seeking a Lead Project Engineer for an in-house, direct hire opportunity with our client, Harley-Davidson, in Milwaukee, WI.

This position is responsible for the day to day management of the work request process supporting the Experimental Machine Shop in the Product Development Center (PDC).  The work environment is a two-shift operation and requires exceptional organizational skill and project planning capabilities. The position requires the technical knowledge for their area of responsibility as well as leadership skills to drive a team of Volt DTS employees to produce the expected daily output and deliverables as defined by the customer.


  • Review and accept work orders for quality and completeness per established Lab guidelines
  • Act as a main interface between customers, lab members, outside suppliers, and Developmental Purchasing
  • Track status of work orders to ensure on-time delivery requirements are met
  • Order raw materials, perishable tooling, and supplies required for the processing of work orders
  • Support Continuous Improvement System efforts in the lab environment
  • Develop and communicate performance expectations to technicians
  • Facilitate and process submittals, interviews, and on-boarding
  • Conduct site specific orientation, including facility tours, meet and greet activity, review of general policies and procedures (camera, communications, site restrictions, non-smoking, etc.)
  • Monitor all timekeeping methods for employees on Volt’s payroll and ensure delivery to Volt in time for processing
  • Complete, performance reviews and implement salary adjustments
  • Recommend employees for promotions
  • Counsel employees on workplace issues including, but not limited to, performance, demeanor, professionalism, conduct, etc., utilizing Volt’s progressive discipline processes
  • Conduct end of assignment, reduction in force and termination activities
  • Address employee issues and questions quickly and efficiently
  • Facilitate group meetings for all personnel to inform, train, reiterate existing policy, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with customer policy and procedure guidelines, such as safety, communications, facility entrance/exit, site restrictions, etc.
  • Administer approved employee relations programs to recognize individual or team efforts and to enhance morale
  • Obtain/assist in the completion of job orders
  • Facilitate paperwork, scheduling and occurrence of training for technicians as determined
  • Prepare and deliver various reports and information upon request and in a timely manner to customer and to Volt- Will include regular scheduled reporting and special reporting as requested
  • Propose, develop and implement processes for increasing efficiency within their area of responsibility
  • Train employees on all technical aspects of their job
  • Manage lab budget for client approved expenditures
  • Satisfy customer needs at work location and work directly with client management to set work objectives and deliverables
  • Provide team leadership, utilizing (fill in the group name) skills, including, but not limited to the following:
    • Inspire team members to perform at their fullest potential
    • Provide outstanding customer service and inspire team members to do the same
    • Create a safe work environment for team members and encourage them to remain vigilant in identifying safety concerns.
  • Constantly assure that all appropriate Safety procedures are observed by the team members
  • Represent Volt DTS and client in a professional, courteous and knowledgeable manner
  • Attend and apply all training, mentoring and coaching supplied by Volt or the customer
  • Embrace Volt’s Six Sigma methodology, tools and resources; and support quality certification standards as provided by the client

Key requirements:

  • Working knowledge of machining, fabrication, and rapid prototype processes
  • Ability to read and understand CAD drawing for the general review of completeness and clarity
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with Machinist Fabricators, stakeholders, internal and external suppliers
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experienced in MS Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)


  • Working knowledge of the CREO 3-D CAD system
  • Ability to locate files in the database and perform basic file manipulation
