Job Summary

This classification covers those employees who perform at journeyman level general and preventative maintenance and troubleshooting work involving a wide variety of skills including but not limited to mechanical, hydraulic, cement masonry, pipe trades, sheet metal and other trades including some welding and fabrication work.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Can perform all assigned duties of Maintenance Mechanic 2.
  • Advises Lead/Group Lead/Manager of problems and makes repairs as needed. Works with minimal amount of supervision.
  • Is able to prioritize or follow scheduling and direction established by Lead/Supervisor/Manager with minimal supervision.
  • Plans functions to be performed from complex assembly, installation and construction blueprints and manufacturers specification sheets, using required shop mathematics and measuring instruments. Performs all work within prescribed state and local codes and ordinances.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic power principles.
  • Able to fabricate simple structures using cutting, welding /fabrication and machine shop equipment.
  • Proficient knowledge of electrical and mechanical maintenance.
  • Be able to train lower level personnel in all aspects of maintenance, safety and quality expectations.
  • Understands and practices the concept of Customer Service as it relates to an internal customer
  • Follows established housekeeping and safety practices to maintain the quality of the work environment.
  • May be part of a maintenance or other team for a specific program.

Tools and Equipment Used:

Shop machinery, hand tools, burning and welding equipment, various hand tools, indicators, micrometers, power tools, levels, gauges, tools common to various trades. Proficient in operating a wide variety of equipment.


  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and two-year degree or apprenticeship completion or certification in a technical trade school equal to a journeyman’s level or equivalent training.
  • Maintains technical competence in advancing technology via frequent training courses, vendor schools, seminars and industry associations and publications.
  • Forklift Certificate (or willingness to obtain with specified period).
  • Read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Read/follow blueprints, and draw schematics.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Performs basic math functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Completes all required data entry & documentation in Maintenance software as required


7+ years experience in an industrial maintenance environment as a Journeyman or as a Mechanic 2 or equivalent.
