Mechanical Engineer-Siemens NX

The Mass Spectrometry Division of is seeking a mechanical design engineer to assist in instrument mechanical and chassis design and prototype construction. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of a senior mechanical engineer, and this work will be time-critical. Results of this work will be used by the New Product Introduction and Order Fulfillment groups life science instruments. The ideal candidate must have a command of Siemens NX CAD software, and preferably knowledge of Creo and/or Solidworks software, a strong understanding of mechanical design, material properties and tolerances, and experience in interfacing with internal and external machine shops. The position entails close interaction with instrumentation researchers. The candidate must have experience with component and prototype assembly. Good organizational and communication skills are critical, as is the ability to deliver quality results with minimal supervision. Core responsibilities for this position include:

* Design high precision assemblies for R&D prototype systems

* Model and design electronic packaging and external covers for a commercial system

* Create detail drawings and models for parts and components, and support those parts/components through fabrication and assembly

* Interface with scientists and EE's to facilitate translating ideas into prototypes.

* Interface with machine shops and other outside vendors

* Assemble, debug, and test prototype mechanical assemblies

* Interact with product groups responsible for utilization and/or commercialization of completed prototype, and transfer of successful designs to production

* Support prototype parts through fabrication.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated 10+ years' work experience in mechanical design
  • Proficient knowledge of Siemens 3D NX CAD, in addition knowledge of Creo and/or Solidworks software will be beneficial.
  • Proficiency with creation of detail drawings for machined and sheet metal parts
  • Good listening skills and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational skills, particularly with regard to record-keeping (vendor interactions, ordered parts/machining status, research notebook entries, periodic presentations for management team review, etc.) and computer file organization/version control
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for working in a diverse, demanding,
