Job Description

Our Client is a $2.8B Portland-based provider of financial products.  The company’s offerings include: group and individual disability insurance, group dental and vision insurance, retirement plans products and services, and investment advice.  Established 100 years ago, our Client offers the stability of an established firm with a collegiate, high-touch service culture.  We are looking for (5) Medical Underwriting Support Coordinator’s to assist during their busy open enrollment period starting in September.   This is a 7+ month opportunity.

Work schedule is somewhat flexible:  Could start work anytime between 5:30 am – 9 am (after training period is completed).  This is a full time position – Monday – Friday – 40 hours per week.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Open, date stamp and distribute incoming mail.  Prepare applicant files for information required by Medical Underwriting, Legal and Benefits personnel.  Determine if there is a previous file for applicant and obtain.
  • Review the ACCESS system and contract information to determine evidence of insurable requirements, contacting underwriting and Group Sales staff as necessary and documenting the applicant file.
  • Input applicant data into the Medical Underwriting tracking system; review application and verify coverage amounts.  Determine if an MIB query is necessary and input appropriate data on the MIB system.  Append MIB responses to the file.
  • Respond to applicants, field force, brokers and other customers through effective oral and written communications to answer questions concerning applications and status.  Advise field force and underwriters when coverage applied for are not currently available or require a policy amendment.
  • Participate in department or Division projects, including product development and quality improvement

Individuals must be organized with the ability to identify and shift priorities to support the team and department in a dynamic environment.  Team members must be open to on the fly coaching.  Successful contributors must be focused on the needs of our internal and external customers and driven to meet or exceed their expectations on a daily basis. 

PAY RATE:  $19.00 per hour

Medical Underwriter Support Coordinator Qualifications:

  • Written and oral communication skills; basic math and typing skills.
  • Ability to learn medical underwriting processes and systems, group insurance products, and risk assessment principles.  Interact effectively with applicants, professional staff and other customers; organize workload to meeting changing priorities and deadlines, and work at a detail level; evaluate applications to ensure compliance with state regulations.
  • Must have 2+ years of recent experience working in an office environment.
  • Excellent customer service experience with the ability to work with empathy and sensitivity is required. Must be a flexible, professional, team player, who’s not afraid to ask question
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment is a must.
  • Ability to prioritize and shift work load daily depending upon client needs.
  • Proven outstanding customer service experience and solid work history required.
  • Intermediate/Advanced in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), is required. 
  • Strong attention to detail, teamwork, decision making, accountability and strong communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Pre-employment screenings: Drug Screen, Background Check and Education Verification.


High School Diploma or General Education Diploma required

Bonus Experience:

Experience working for an Insurance Company and/or with Life/Disability/Medical Claims.
