Process Improvement Technician - Die Tester

This company located in Tacoma, WA (near Fife) is seeking a Process Improvement Technician. The company specializes in traffic safety market products and solutions as well as serves as it West Coast Fence operation for chain-link fence enhancements products. Experienced with engineering resin materials and formulation of its own blends to support new products, the site has a reputation for innovation and proprietary product development. Recently it has provided solutions to the Lighting industry as well.  The selected candidate will modify existing tooling designs with use of AutoCAD. Test and tune new die designs working directly with extrusion operators on product design. Tune and revise existent dies and designs. Test and certify new and existent traffic and fence products. Good computer skills. Able to work well with others / self-motivated.

Strong mechanical skills. Strong Attendance and Safety Record. Must have the aptitude to follow verbal and written directions. Ability to use a Calipers and measure to the closest milometer. Must have good math skills: Able to add, subtract, divide, multiply decimals and weight grams. Ability to identify the root-cause of defects in product and recommend processing adjustments to eliminate the defect. Dedicated, self-motivated with positive attitude and very good communication / teamwork skills.

Willingness to learn, flexible to new ideas and strong analytical / problem solving skills. Understanding of how to design for manufacturing processes including dies, calibrators, sizers, tank plates, jig plates, drawing, die cutting, and extrusion operations. Prior experience with die design revisions and test equipment. Knowledgeable of extrusion equipment and related downstream equipment. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate should possess an Associate degree and/or industrial certification preferred.  Candidate must have experience on concepts and techniques related to designing dies for use at extrusion plants as well as generating the die manufacturing print packages for the various die manufacturing processes.

Candidate will be interacting closely with other Design Engineers, Extrusion operators for design, manufacturing, and revisions of dies in extrusion plants. The candidate will be required to communicate with all levels of the organization, fabricators, machinists, etc. to ensure design understanding and continuity through manufacturing and into extrusion. In addition, the candidate will facilitate integration with the New Products Introduction (NPI) process, manufacturing reviews to hand off to Operations and Scheduling, and the extrusion plants. Observe all prescribed or standard safety rules and regulations.

Proficiency with AutoCAD is required. Experience in extrusion operation and die testing. (5+ years). Experience with designs of dies, calibrators and related tooling. Experience with die testing and revisions of die tooling. Work from assigned schedule, work orders, perform and make decisions as the sequence of setups and processes within recognized methods and procedures. Obtain work instruction and follow prescribed procedures to set or monitor a limited number of barrel augur, extruder, and related work equipment, such as downstream lines, haul offs, saws, and grinders. Operate equipment or monitor continuing operations to maintain proper flow of plastics. Create and maintain die testing records of all test conducted. Remove completed work; make simple tolerance and/or measurement checks required. Perform or assist in complicated die setups for the extrusion process. Detect and repair/report defective tooling, contaminated material, unusual conditions, or faulty equipment.

Experience in the extrusion process and/or experience as a machine operator. Must have experience in reading production specifications and/or profile drawings. Good mechanical and technical aptitude a plus. Set up extrusion lines, extrusion/die head changes, monitoring all line controls & making proper adjustments, and checking dimensions/quality of product. Examine products for fine defects and perform first article inspection testing while maintaining production records. Ensure work is completion to standard. Keep area clean and equipment in good working order.
