Under minimal direction, the Project Manager executes the Project Management function to ensure successful and profitable completion of projects assigned to him or her.  The Project Manager will also participate in the business development process by actively seeking project workload from new and existing clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

I.     Project Management

        •     Plan, organize and control all elements of a project.

        •     Reviews project plans and proposals, identifies project responsibilities by determining the phases and elements of the project.

        •     Effectively exercise profit and loss (P&L) responsibility for projects.

        •     In collaboration with the Project Controls team, calculates time frames and sequences the stages of the project.

        •     Prepares and distributes a description of, a task list for, and a timeline of the project.

        •     Studies project design, customer requirements for performance standards, and then determines project specifications.  Presents cost estimates and performance standards.

        •     In consultation with the Managers, requests appropriate workforce resources for his or her project.  Works through the Group Managers to assign staff to specifics phases, tasks and elements of the project.

        •     Through project coordination meetings and other forms of communication, oversees and coordinates the technical aspects of the project.

        •     Prepares status reports and regularly monitors budgets and schedules per the Project Action Plan and Engineering Status Report processes.

        •     Approves expenditures charged to the project.

        •     Presents and enforces client standards, procedures, rules and regulations to those involved in the project.

        •     Provides on-site consultative services to the client when requested and within scope of the project.

        •     Monitors project scope and proactively consults with clients in regards to change orders and requests for additional project funding or deadline/deliverable adjustment.

II.    Business Development

        •     Client contacts- new and established.

        •     Proposal creation and presentations.

        •     Client maintenance and follow-up after project completion.

Education and Experience

•     Bachelor of Science in Engineering discipline or related field; or

•     5++ years of project management experience in a consulting engineering firm; or

•     3+ years of experience as a project engineer or similar role on complex integrated systems projects; or

•     Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

•     MBA and/or PMP Certification a plus.

  • PE License a plus

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•     Demonstrated knowledge in engineering principles, practices and methods, regulations, engineering project management methods, workplace safety, budgeting, employee supervision, and personnel management.

•     Proven ability to effectively delegate authority to team members.

•     Must be flexible and able to work well in a fast-paced environment handling simultaneously occurring tasks and smaller projects.

•     Proven ability to negotiate back charges and settlements with customers and suppliers.

•     Ability to communicate effectively within all ranks and across groups within and outside the organization, both oral and written.

•     Ability to draft and manage comprehensive project plans to completion.

•     Ability to proactively identify upcoming risks, issues, bottlenecks, and other threats to project cash flow and develop appropriate contingencies.

•     Must possess well-developed problem-analyzing and problem-solving skills and must be capable of independent decision-making.

•     Must be able to conduct business in a professional manner with internal customers, external clients, and field personnel.

•     MS Office Skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

•     Must be willing to support a culture of quality and continuous improvement.

•     Good organizational skills.

•     Ability to work in a team environment.

•     Experience in working with multiple discipline projects.

•     Ability to work to time constraints and schedules, and meet tight deadlines.

•     Ability to mentor and help develop other project managers.

•     Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

•     Pre-employment drug screening.

•     Background screening includes previous employment, education, and criminal history.


Travel to project sites on frequent basis.  May include day trips or overnight, extended travel from time-to-time.

•     Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus.

•     Job will generally be performed in an office environment, but may require travel to visit a client’s office or industrial/construction job site.  Conditions will vary at each location, but the conditions listed above will generally apply.  When performing work outside Mid-South Engineering offices, appropriate safety training and safety equipment will be provided by Mid-South and/or Client as required.

•     Additional hours beyond 45 per week may be necessary as workload’s dictate.  This may include weekdays, weekends and/or holidays.
