Job Description

RF and Assembly Technician 

This company in Hillsboro, Oregon is seeking a Prototype Technician for a 9 month maybe longer contract role. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assemble and modify microelectronic semiconductor devices, components, and subassemblies according to drawings and specifications using die attach, wire bonding, small surface mount attach (down to 01005).  This requires long periods of work under a microscope using a soldering iron or hot air devices.
  • Use manual and automated techniques to characterize RF power amplifier modules using equipment such as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, power meters, DC power supplies, digital pattern generators, and a variety of microwave components
  • Document test procedures and measurement results.
  • Configure test equipment setups for various types of specialized RF test methods given general direction and guidance.  Collect, validate, and present measurement data.
  • Support design engineers with measurement requests

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree in technical field or equivalent military training.
  • 3+ years of experience in RF test, including power amplifier or low noise amplifier test in a design characterization environment.
  • Working knowledge of RF circuits and transmission lines.
  • Proficiency in use of the following equipment: RF signal generator, spectrum analyzer, vector network analyzer, power meter, DC power supply, oscilloscope, arbitrary waveform generator, digital pattern generation, and other microwave components.
  • Proficiency in use of Excel or other data processing and presentation tools.
  • Excellent organization skills, plus good verbal and written communication skills.

Ideal Candidate Should Be Able to:

  1. Listen carefully to the design engineers describe a measurement task, write it down clearly, and execute the task carefully and accurately.   He or she should be able to report the measurement results in clear verbal and written form, usually including graphs that are clear and easy to interpret.
  2. Understand how to run the equipment used to test electronic components from DC to RF frequencies.  This includes detail knowledge of how power supplies, power meters, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and oscilloscopes are used to make valid measurements.
  3. Be comfortable with using common software tools such as Office, Excel, Word processors as well as able to learn quickly how to use custom software that controls the test equipment.    The candidate should be familiar with basics of software operation, particularly in a test automation environment.   Basic understanding of digital logic to control some interfaces is also required.
  4. Be able to converse with the engineer about RF fundamentals of inductance, capacitance, impedance, return loss, VSWR, and RF filtering.  Knowing how the Smith Chart works at basic levels is helpful to the job.
  5. Understand how a receiver works, how an amplifier works, and how things like noise, sensitivity, harmonics, compression, and dynamic range are related to the performance of receivers and amplifiers.
  6. Solder small wires or components using very precise hand tools under a microscope.  Use a schematic and layout diagram to locate or place components on a circuit board.
  7. Debug complex electronic systems or individual component problems.  This sometimes means figuring out if the root cause of a problem is the hardware or software.  Or figure out if the problem is caused by the device under test or the test system itself.
  8. Learn and retain a lot of various specs, new test methods, and new software tools.  This sometimes means writing documentation to explain to others what you have learned about a new test method or how to properly use a software tool.
  9. Work and communicate respectfully and with patience with a wide variety of people when the project team is under pressure to meet a deadline.
