Research Associate CRISPR Tissue Culture Specialist-La Jolla, CA

Volt is seeking a research associate to work with a team developing CRISPR/Cas workflows and applications that utilize synthetic RNA guides. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with an innovative, multidisciplinary team preparing state-of-the-art technologies to produce complex oligonucleotides for a variety of life sciences and clinical applications including CRISPR.

Key responsibilities will be the production and maintenance of mammalian tissue culture cell lines that have been modified using CRISPR/cas techniques. Other responsibilities will include sample preparation, data acquisition, and data analysis of modified cell lines and generation of data to support use of synthetic RNAs. Detailed record keeping of all steps in the workflow is imperative. Under the guidance of supervisor, you will be utilizing CRISPR/Cas methodologies to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of RNA guides and tissue culture techniques with regards to gene editing and genome engineering. You will be responsible for ordering, maintaining, and monitoring an inventory of tissue culture reagents.

Works on experimentation of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires understanding of overall purpose of experimental design and troubleshooting skills.

Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.

Works on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in depth evaluation of various factors.

Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Molecular biology, Biology, Biochemistry, or equivalent.
  • 2+ years' experience in Molecular Biology techniques and nucleotide handling (esp. RNA handling, nucleotide extractions, PCR)
  • Experience with Tissue culture techniques -- specifically in the development and execution of mammalian tissue culture, cell line generation, transfection of cells lines
  • Exposure to Good laboratory practice and maintenance of reagents and tissue culture media.
  • Excellent attention to detail, ability to multi-task, excellent documentation of experimental work and summary of results under supervisor guidance
  • Ability to work independently and to execute and troubleshoot new methods.
  • Excellent time management, record keeping, teamwork and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy including proficiency with Word and Excel

Desired Qualifications

  • Operational knowledge of high throughput nucleotide extractions (e.g. Qiacube)
  • Experience in the optimization of transformation/transfected protocols of oligonucleotides (RNA and DNA) and proteins into cell lines
  • Hands-on experience manipulating RNA in an R&D environment and practiced in RNAse-free lab techniques
  • Experience in executing assays to evaluate cell viability and cytotoxicity
  • Experience with CRISPR and gene editing techniques
