Research Technologist (6-month contract) $28-30/hr.
Littleton, CO


Summary:
The purpose of the Research Technologist’s position is to engage in routine measurements, characterization, and upkeep in the Glass Laboratory. The Research Technologist will be responsible for utilizing laboratory skills and knowledge of instrumentation to support day-to-day activities within the Glass team. Engineers and managers within the group and rely on the data produced by this individual to make informed decisions. The Research Technologist is accountable for completing assigned tasks and duties, assuring reliable measurement results, and controlling the operation and maintenance of lab equipment.

Responsibilities:

• Provide laboratory services for routine and non-routine testing activities in support of glass production.
• Receive samples, entering them into SAP, and recording test results in SAP
• Routine sample preparation (weighing, crushing, fusing, splitting)
• Glass Viscosity measurements at high temperature
• Liquidus temperature of glass
• Fuse glass pieces and beads
• Glass density
• Littleton softening point of glass
• Sample splitting and preparation for multiple tests
• Raw Materials analysis
• Wet and dry sieve analysis using a sample splitter and sieves
• Moisture and LOI analysis
• Melting of glasses from batch materials
• Maintain and repair all laboratory equipment including rebuilding melt furnaces, High Temperature Viscosity instruments, and temperature gradient furnaces
• Safely work with HF (hydrofluoric) acid for cleaning glass from laboratory items.
• Participate in day-to-day operation of lab and some general administrative duties
• Prioritize assigned work, plan work schedule and activities to complete short- and long-term assignments and report weekly activities and accomplishments
• Create and maintain statistical process control charts for laboratory measurements
• Write Job Safety Analysis, update current standard test methods, and participate on development and review of new test methods.

Qualifications:


• High School diploma with a minimum of 8 years of industrial experience
• MS Office proficiency, especially MS Excel
• Ability to meet deadlines and target dates for daily work and special projects
• Ability to work with high temperature furnaces and capable of lifting and handling ten-pound, hot crucibles.
• Ability to travel as needed up to 5% PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree in a technical degree preferred
• Laboratory experience to include lab safety experience
• Solid academic performance
• Self-starter with solid team participation skills
• SAP experience
