The Driveline Analysis work group provides simulation services primarily to the Integrated Power Systems Controls (IPS) team, a fairly new area for Caterpillar interested in achieving improved performance by closer integration of engine, transmission and hydraulic systems controls. The incumbent will work with our performance modeling team lead in delivery of controls performance evaluations and the machine models required in these analyses. The incumbent will gain a thorough understanding of engine, and transmission hardware and controls design through this assignment.

Job Details

The engineer will study machine system performance using our in-house dynamics modeling software (Dynasty) and Matlab/Simulink, with special emphasis on engine, transmission, lower powertrain and after treatment systems. The engineer should have the capability to improve control algorithms in the machine systems themselves or in the operator models we use to control our simulations. The engineer will build models, integrate controls, and analyze results to provide assessments in regards to machine performance, fuel efficiency and reliability. The engineer will also compare simulation results to measured test data from labs and machines for validation. Differences will be analyzed and resolved by proper changes in the model or machine.

Typical Day

The engineer will work at a desk in Mossville, IL with some trips to the Peoria Proving Grounds for machine testing and Powertrain test labs in Mossville.
