Job Description

VOLT is looking for a Maintenance Automation Engineer with PLC and SCADA programming experience for our client in Spokane, WA.  Our client is the world’s premier producer of rolled aluminum and global leader in aluminum recycling and their R&D group is a fast-paced, hands-on, innovation-focused facility that assists all company production facilities in creating and supplying the safest, most efficient technology-driven products to their customers. The R&D team is looking to add another engineer to their long-tenured team.


  • This role will demonstrate the use of specialized knowledge to independently address more complex engineering problems.
  • Typically focused on design or product application/development work in a specific area.
  • Will participate in project-focused roles that demonstrate multiple large-scale project successes on the plant/regional/global levels.
  • Will serve as a mentor to junior staff for their technical development.
  • The ability to assess viability of a technology, process or method, within technical discipline and make recommendations as to the best application based on business needs. 
  • Demonstrate a general knowledge of regional and global products and processes, business strategies and trends in the industry including plans of competitors. The incumbent is very active in sharing and adopting best practices regionally between R&T centers and/or plants and potentially globally.

Job Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering.
  • 10 or more years of progressive work experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Performs engineering tasks of high complexity; maintains and diagnoses critical equipment, processes, or performance issues.
  • Independently isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to design appropriate possible solutions.
  • Independently troubleshoots most problems within area of expertise and able to work autonomously.
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of the KPIs for a work area or project and recognizes the significance to the business.
  • Uses creativity, innovation and knowledge of multiple engineering disciplines and processes to solve complex problems affecting multiple sites.
  • Can implement and identify simple or site-specific process improvements. Drive change of inefficient work processes impacting operations in area of accountability.
  • Proposes, justifies and leads highly-complex projects for a site or highly complex segments of larger projects impacting multiple sites or the region/global levels.
  • Up to 30% travel to client facilities internationally/domestically for equipment evaluation/optimization and startup.

Technical Skills:

  • PLC programming for Allen-Bradley, Siemens, GE and Modicon’s.
  • HMI / SCADA programming for Intellution, FTView, Wonderware, WinCC, PView HMI’s.
  • Experience integrating automation systems w/ Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
  • Experience with virtualized servers and networks.
