Thin Film-Sr. Principle Engineer

Basic Function of the Job

Develop, improve, optimize, and document products and processes that support and strengthen PACC’s technological capability and products.  This may include, but is not limited to: identifying and aiding development of new product opportunities for PACC within the thin-film optical industry; serving as a technical interface with customers and vendors; benchmarking product and process capabilities both within the company and compared to competitors; identifying and leading efforts to improve process and product capability, especially with respect to thin-film design, metrology, and process automation efforts; leading efforts to leverage automation to reduce engineering oversight and strengthen engineering impact in manufacturing processes; and fostering technical idea exchange and growth within the engineering team.

  • Master of Science or higher technical degree in Physics or Engineering.
  • 15+ years of experience in design, development and manufacturing of thin film Optical Coatings and Development of Thin film Deposition Processes.
  • Track record of developing/creating new thin film optical products and processes, using existing and new technology resources.
  • In-depth knowledge of optics and optical thin-film products and applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of statistical and computational tools, interpretation of results and an ability to clearly communicate results to the organization.
  • Expert at computation modeling and application development for use by engineering and manufacturing personal within a variety of programming platforms (Excel, Matlab, LabVIEW, etc.).
  • Proven track record of product and process development and establishment of product acceptance and process health metrics.
  • Experience with problem analysis, communication and resolution tools.
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing tools and theories, including six-sigma, quality systems, stage-gate development, quality by design, DFMEA, etc.
  • Knowledge of quality systems, ability to accurately interpret drawings and specifications for optical components.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply new concepts and applications in optics and manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and effectively communicate complex concepts to an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and lead cross-functional programs to develop or improve products and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence peers and foster cross-functional communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results independently or working with others.
  • Ability to recommend and implement improvements.
  • Ability to solve complex/abstract problems in a timely and quality manner.

  • Detailed understanding of PACC thin-film products and their function in the end products of customers.
  • Familiarity with the product offerings and process capabilities of PACC’s competitors.
  • Understanding of the physics of PACC-specific products, such as gain-flattening filters, of the design methodologies and specific process capabilities and trade-offs within the current process capability envelope.
  • Provide basic program management support for individual projects as well as team-based efforts to develop products and processes.
  • Streamline, standardize, improve, and train others in the employment of best practices, especially in thin-film product design.
  • Ability to conceive and lead development of new manufacturing process capabilities and process control systems that complement PACC’s core manufacturing processes.
  • Recognize and assist others within the engineering team in the development of evolutionary as well as revolutionary product and process development opportunities.
  • Ability to efficiently assess new product opportunities in light of the existing capabilities and product offerings of PACC, and to effectively assess the level of difficulty in meeting new customer requirements or product offerings.
  • High-level understanding of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the PACC product portfolio, from a technical perspective.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities involving external and internal priorities.
