Job Description

Responsible for leading the site Quality Engineering Team, driving process improvement, improving delivered quality, and maintaining compliance to AS9100, Nadcap, customer, regulatory, and internal requirements. Requires a thorough knowledge of Quality Engineering, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance processes, combined with a background in continuous improvement and corrective action methodologies within an Aerospace Manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Must exercise knowledge to perform a variety of job duties relating to the execution of quality by:

  • Manage the priorities, tasks, activities, development and performance of an aerospace Quality Engineering Team within a metal fabrication and assembly operation.
  • Identify and drive improvements in internal defect, scrap and rework activity, customer returns, and supplier rejections using proven quality improvement tools, statistical analysis, and methodologies such as Kaizen and Lean/Six Sigma.
  • Maintain a cost of poor quality metrics process as a basis for identifying opportunities for improvement and educating the organization towards a Zero-Defect mindset.
  • Manage a Customer Return Material process.
  • Manage Master Routing and Item Master approval processes.
  • Manage a Material Review Board (MRB) activity as MRB Chair.
  • Manage and prioritize the activities of Quality Engineers within an Integrated Performance Team / Focused Factory Structure, and via Customer Facing Program Quality Engineering Functions.
  • Manage the Supplier Quality Process including Supplier Surveys, Supplier Risk Assessments, Supplier Audits, Purchase Order Review, and support of Receiving Inspection Functions.
  • Maintain a leading edge understanding of the quality processes and functions required in the design, manufacturing, or out-sourcing of aerospace components and assemblies.  
  • Specify, justify and coordinate procurement of capital assets that improve manufacturing processes, inspection and testing efficiency, and employee productivity.
  • Assure compliance to AS9100 and Nadcap certifications via support of the internal audit program, preparing for customer and regulatory audits, and hosting audit activities.
  • Train and mentor employees on effective corrective action and root cause analysis tools.
  • Ensure effective implementation of applicable industry and customer quality standards in the execution of quality-related activities.
  • Partner with design engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply chain, and operations to support new product development, new product industrialization and sustaining quality engineering activities.
  • Provide Quality Engineering project oversight and management, including initiating and leading cross-functional teams when needed.
  • Actively coach and provide career development assistance to team members.
  • Develop future leaders by effective selection, mentorship, and development activities.
  • Report progress and status of projects on a timely basis to leadership.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS Degree in an Engineering discipline required with a minimum of 10 years manufacturing experience, or a combination of education and 15 years of experience.
  • Experience with AS9100, and Nadcap certified processes such as Welding, X-Ray, Liquid Penetrant, Heat Treat, Chemical Processing, and Laser Machining.
  • Experience with GEMBA initiatives and directives, Kaizen, and Lean-Six Sigma.
  • ASQ Six Sigma and/or Quality Engineer Certification highly desirable.
  • Ability to partner with peer managers to drive business objectives, improve processes, and improve delivered quality.
  • Working knowledge of up-to-date control methodologies such as PFMEA, PPAP, and APQP.
  • Proficiency with mechanical inspection processes, CMM and PCMM, blueprint reading, GD&T and interpretation of material and process procedures and specifications
