Job Description

Our client, a growing company within the insurance industry is seeking a Sr. Systems Engineer to work at their Durham, NC location. 

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and administering virtualized and bare metal servers and virtualization platforms located on-premise and in cloud. The Senior Systems Engineer will be responsible for the development of optimized, secured, and performance tuned Windows environments (including database, directory, domain, file, and application servers and services) and creating and maintaining relevant build documents and run books. 

The Senior Systems Engineer will administer and configure Office 365 (email, office applications), and will also be responsible for designing, engineering, and administering Citrix and VMWare servers and environments, along with IT infrastructure tools (such as monitoring, alerting, ticketing, etc.).  The Senior Systems Engineer will install, upgrade, patch, administer, secure, configure, and monitor these technologies, and suggest optimization and other improvements. 

The Senior Systems Engineer will promote and extend an agile continuous deployment paradigm, with a strong focus on IT automation and scripted configuration using tools like Ansible.  Over time, the Senior Systems Engineer will partner with other Infrastructure and Architecture leads to design and engineer a DevOps self-service capability to allow for the automatic spin up and spin down of dev/test environments.  The Senior Systems Engineer will ensure no configuration drift occurs and if it does it is detected.

The Senior Engineer will be responsible for configurations and hardware platforms, installing and starting services, upgrades and patching, monitoring and managing alerts and tickets, managing Active Directory and O365 services, filesystem layout and file shares, etc.  The Senior Engineer may package desktop software for deployment via Citrix or to desktops, and support desktops, laptops, and mobile devices as needed.


  • Participates in the engineering of Windows, Citrix, and VMWare environments
  • Drives and implements IT automation allowing for reduced touch infrastructure management and deployment, self-service, and CI/CD capability
  • Defining appropriate level of monitoring using industry-standard tools and ensuring alerting levels are meaningful and actionable
  • Creates and maintains appropriate build documentation, run books, and best practices
  • Leads day to day operations of Windows, Citrix, and VMWare environments
  • Manage Windows, VMWare, and Citrix installation, upgrades, patching, and security updates
  • Support integration of new acquisitions
  • Manage Active Directory and Office 365
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of monitoring, ticketing, ITSM, and service desk platforms
  • Provide end-user support both in-person and remote
  • Contributes to defining and estimating timelines, costs, and feasibility for infrastructure efforts
  • Ensure the performance of the infrastructure meet expectation and requirement
  • Mentors junior staff


  • 5+ years of experience engineering and/or administering Windows and/or virtualization systems and solutions
  • Demonstrated commitment to building and maintaining system documentation
  • Strong knowledge of PowerShell
  • Demonstrated skill with securing Windows and virtualization environments
  • Demonstrated experience with IT Automation technology; Red Hat Ansible a major plus
  • Experience with Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP
  • Senior level experience with Citrix virtualization technology
  • Senior level experience with VMWare virtualization technology
  • Experience in both cloud and on-premise environments
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Expert experience in backups, restoration, and high availability solutions
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in an extremely fast-paced, challenging environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, or 10 years equivalent work experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a technical and non-technical audience
  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships and build rapport to influence colleagues at all levels, uncover business issues, and identify needs
  • Demonstrated skill with estimating time, cost, and resource requirements for projects
  • Experience working in a hybrid on- and off-shore model
  • Experience with VoIP / telephony, network printing, desktop support, and network device management
  • Experience with Ansible or similar
  • Senior level experience with Storage technologies including SAN, EMC, NAS, iSCSI, Fiber Channel
  • Experience with engineering Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments
