This is a Direct Hire position in the beautiful Eastern Montana region and offered exclusively through Volt Workforce Solutions.

JOB SUMMARY: Position is responsible for the campus IT infrastructure, including wired and wireless networks, servers and server applications, and the Campus ERP system.  In addition, the position oversees planning, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of technology for personal computers and software, classrooms, computer labs, servers, web, distance learning, and administrative software. The Director works with a wide variety of campus stakeholders and ensures effective support of all campus technology.

Nature of Work: This position performs professional and technical duties in the operation of technology components for the campus. Position must pay attention to detail and timeliness of activities. Position works primarily indoors and will frequently perform heavy lifting (computers, servers, audio/visual equipment, and computer related hardware). Position must be able to troubleshoot problems and establish good relations with the faculty and the community.

 Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with college employees, students, community members, and vendors.

Supervision Received: Position is self-directed; receives work orders and email concerning problems or need for information and/or assistance.

Supervision Exercised: On a daily basis, position will supervise the Associate Director of Information Technology, and oversee the supervision of IT Specialists and students. Position will train all personnel to perform job duties according to best practices to prevent loss or damage of information and equipment.

Essential Functions: Position requires ability to: install, configure, and maintain complex wired and wireless networks, administer Windows and some Linux servers, and support and manage enterprise applications.  The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing; prepare and present policies and procedures for department and institution; make long-term plans for technology deployment and management that align with the Strategic Plan of the Institution; manage significant budgets using standard accounting practices; manage records and equipment where errors could severely disrupt operations and cause irrecoverable loss; visually demonstrate and inspect equipment; prioritize work; operate a computer and related equipment; troubleshoot computer and network problems; train faculty and staff in use of technology; maintain inventory; purchase, install and maintain technological equipment and software.


Computer Network Management:

  • Install and maintain all network connections.
  • Perform operating system upgrades.
  • Maintain all client and server network hardware and software.
  • Install, setup, and configuration of network switches (HP ProCurve).
  • Maintain and administer VPN for off-campus access to employee resources.
  • Install, configure, and maintain wireless access points and controllers (Meraki).
  • Maintain and administer core network applications including DHCP, DNS, etc.
  • Stay abreast of network technologies through training, peer advisory, trade publications, and electronic resources.
  • Train faculty and staff to use local area network.
  • Ensure stability of primary network backbone infrastructure.
  • Perform wiring of new connections and repair of old connections for CAT5 and fiber optic connected devices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network problems.
  • Trace and resolve excessive usage of network resources using relevant technologies.


  • Evaluate, Install, and maintain server-grade computing hardware.
  • Install and administer/maintain Windows and some Linux server operating systems.
  • Install, administer, and maintain applications running on servers, including:
    • ESET (anti-virus)
    • Windows Software Update Service (WSUS) and Windows Deployment Service (WDS)
  • Maintain and administer Active Directory domain.
  • Maintain and administer windows file shares.
  • Maintain and support servers in a VMWare virtualized environment.
  • Install and maintain all network connections.
  • Perform operating system upgrades.
  • Monitor and maintain backups of mission critical files.
  • Setup and maintain server storage.


  • Provide technical assistance with phone equipment and connections.
  • Primary liaison to outsourced telephony provider.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on bandwidth and connectivity needs.
  • Install and maintain connections with MUS systems and with local ISP's.
  • Install and maintain firewalls and routers.
    • Configure internal-external IP address/port mappings
    • Configure external address pool and NAT (network address translation) settings.
  • Manage traffic shaping appliance (Packetshaper).

Technology Committee:

  • Chair Technology Committee.
  • Direct committee meetings and purchases: servers, desktops, software, etc.
  • Research how advances in computing hardware and software affect spending of Technology Fee.
  • Address concerns raised during meetings in a professional and supportive manner.
  • Manage Technology Fee budget.


  • Install and maintain web server software, including:
    • Apache
    • PHP
    • PostGres and MySQL
    • SFTP
  • Develop forms and content on web site.
  • Maintain organization of web site content.
  • Perform editorial duties as needed.
  • Develop custom displays for web site content via PHP, Drupal, and other web technologies.
  • Install and maintain streaming media server for athletic events.
  • Configure and maintain Eventlink service for calendars and emergency notifications.
  • Collect and analyze website statistics and performance metrics.

Information Security & Security Hardware:

  • Manage Active Directory accounts and permissions
  • Maintain file system permissions and file sharing permissions on servers.
  • Create and maintain student e-mail accounts.
  • Create and maintain employee e-mail accounts, e-mail archives, and distribution lists.
  • Maintain server administration accounts for management and backup.
  • Maintain permissions and user accounts for Banner INB, Self-Service, VPN, and database server access.
  • Manage hardware and software for campus security cameras.
  • Maintain off-campus access to HVAC system via network.
