Job Title: Software Systems Safety Engineer

PLEASE NOTE: This job is in San Diego, CA - Must consider/willing to relocate

Job Location: San Diego, CA (Rancho Bernardo)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Performs software safety analysis to identify whether software can contribute to a hazard.
  • Identifies specific software modules or functions associated with the hazard cause, identifies hazard elimination and hazard control methodologies and associated software safety requirements, and verifies that the inhibits and controls incorporated to eliminate or mitigate hazards are effective.
  • Performs software safety-critical assessments based on governments and civilian safety standards.
  • Prepares software safety plans or contributes to system safety plans, including software safety.
  • Ensures that safety-critical software functions are tracked and that risks are reduced through valid controls to ensure safer software operation within a system.
  • Ensures that software requirements specifications clearly identify the software safety requirements.
  • Ensures bi-directional traceability between software safety requirements and system hazards, which traces down to the software design, implementation, and verification method.
  • Ensures that safety issues related to software are addressed in formal and informal reviews and that specific safety analysis and tests are performed especially when there are specific software safety issues and potential hazards.
  • Acts as a technical liaison between project system safety engineers and project software engineers.
  • Interfaces with the testing organizations to ensure verification of hazard controls implemented by software.
  • Reviews safety-critical software requirements for inclusion in project technical specifications.
  • Provides expertise in Software System Safety and/or System Safety engineering activities related to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Responsibilities include meeting various compliance, reporting, and safety standards including civil safety (ARP4761) and military safety (MIL-STD-882E Level of Rigor (LOR) ). A primary function is supporting the Systems Safety Working Group (SSWG), interacting with the customer’s safety & software safety organizations and coordinating with our systems safety group and subcontractors.
  • Familiar with hazard analyses, such as fault tree analysis (FTA), functional hazard assessment (FHA), safety assessment reports (SAR) and system safety hazard analysis (SHA) a plus.
  • Experience with software safety is beneficial.
  • Facilitation & quality. Assertive, leadership to generate customer and internal stakeholder engagement across multiple contracts
  • Facilitates schedule performance thru optimized implementation planning with CAMs
  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments and develops solutions to complex problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required. 

Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.

Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals; the capability of representing the organization as a prime technical contact; and, the ability to provide leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.

Must be customer focused and able to work on a self- initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required. A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium, and invited and/or participated on an engineering review panel are desirable.

- Must have a complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
- Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

- Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.
