Job Description

Are you a Technical Writer or Instructional Designer with proficient knowledge of writing manuals for the government?  Do you have hands-on experience with NIST and SSP?  If so, then you may the person we are looking for!

**Candidates that do NOT have hands-on experience with the CRITICAL requirements below documented on their resume, will NOT be considered for the position.  It is a hard stop if the candidate does not have the critical requirements (no exceptions):

  • Hands-on experience with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) compliance.
  • Familiarity with developing and maintaining a System Security Plan (SSP)

Our client, a leader in government services and IT support, is seeking a self-motivated Technical Writer for this independent position with challenging work.  The selected candidate will work this SIX-MONTH CONTRACT-TO-HIRE opportunity in Orlando, FL.  Although this is an on-call opportunity (there is some flex work), normal working hours are from 8am to 5pm.  Additionally, this position will give the selected candidate more visibility to the ITO systems.  Depending on where the documentation is, this candidate will work with the project team.  He or she will work with the Developers and the Analysts gathering input using templates.  The candidate will also gather input to ensure the required documentation is completed.  They would do this for a new project or an existing effort.  One of the biggest challenges in this role is the lack of availability to get the information written down in one speck.  So, for the next 3 months, our client’s goal is to complete the Systems Security Plan for the organization.

  • Preparing, writing, and editing IT documentation and reports including graphic presentation of information, which incorporates feedback from the specialists, analysts, programmers, and operations personnel.
  • Interpreting technical documentation standards and regulating quality documentation according to standards.  Documentation is for both technical and non-technical personnel audiences.
  • Editing and reviewing documents for appropriate grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting and making corrections/recommendations for correction.
  • Editing, proofreading, and providing written support on documents and sections prepared by leads to create a document's 'single voice' consistency for communications to the customer.
  • Checking drafts for format, clarity, and overall cohesiveness; ensuring the documents meet editorial and government specifications and adhere to standards for quality, graphics, coverage, format, and style. Interfacing with project teams and other groups in coordinating/preparing documentation, reviewing rough drafts, making suggestions, and finalizing documentation.

Typical assignments would include (but not limited to):

  • Supporting ITO POMs with development or updating system documents such as CONOPS and System Security Plans (SSPs).
  • Providing general support in documenting technical information and other duties in a timely manner in support of the Program/Project Managers, Task Leads, or staff.
  • Performing routine and non-routine tasks including special projects.
  • Interacting with other staff to gather, supply, and/or coordinate information.

Required Skills

  • Three years (3) of technical writing and documentation experience is required.
  • A minimum of one year (1) must be in IT technical documentation.
  • Three (3) or more years of working experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Must have substantial knowledge of the capabilities of computer systems and demonstrate good communication skills and the ability to juggle overlapping tasks and priorities, work independently or under general direction only.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, collaboration skills to include obtaining information from contributors within short periods of time.

Desired Skills

  • A background in developing process flow documents and operating procedures.
