Job Title:                     Tool Designer II

SUMMARY

Perform various tool design and CAD drawing activities for both the US and Thailand operations.  Primary function will be the design of progressive die tooling for new and existing products.  This includes conceptualization and proof of concept trials in the tool room and press room.  Additional design projects will include design of automation tooling, inspection fixtures and various jigs and fixtures in support of the manufacturing and inspection operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform concept to detailed design of precision tooling and fixtures using CAD software.
  • Prepare layout and sections views of tool designs for peer review as well as detailed dimensioned prints for fabrication, either internally or externally.
  • Lead reviews of new tooling designs.
  • Fit and assemble new tooling and equipment, and engage in process discovery and studies to fabricate first and prototype parts.
  • Interface with manufacturing, engineering and quality as a vital team member.
  • Manage drawing documents with accurate numbering, revision controls and bills of material.
  • Interface with outside tooling vendors to manage tooling requisitions and ensure vendors maintain quality standards.
  • Search out and recommend new technologies to improve or augment stamping and metal forming capabilities.

  • Physical Demands: Use hands or fingers to touch or feel. Proper lifting techniques required.
  • Work Environment: Occasional exposure to the manufacturing areas where certain areas may require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection. For the most part room temperatures are ambient, with lighting and traditional office equipment to be found.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • 2 years minimum technical school
  • 7 years minimum related work experience
  • 6 years minimum stamping experience (tight tolerance progressive dies preferred)
  • 2 years minimum experience controlling documents
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or Autocad
  • Familiarity with tooling materials including tool steels and carbides
  • Familiarity with electrical and pneumatic controls
  • Proficiency in strip layout and progressive stamping die design
  • Knowledge of die sensing
  • Proficiency in ANSI Y14.5 and GD&T
  • Knowledge of dimension measurement tools and systems
  • Effective multi-tasking and time management skills
  • Statistical tools and SPC experience a plus
