Underwriting Assistant

3 months + Possible Conversion

$20 Hourly

Full Time- M-F

40 hours per week

Downtown, Portland

Establish proposal files and maintain proposal database.  Pre-underwrite proposals and/or underwrite straightforward proposals.  Establish renewal files and maintain renewal database.  Pre-underwrite renewals.  Review and evaluate new group applications.  Establish medical evidence files and maintain medical evidence database , analyze and evaluate basic medical evidence applications, and communicate decisions to applicants.  Produce and/or transmit Schedule A tax information.


Contribute to the company’s success through excellent customer service and meeting or exceeding performance objectives for the following major job functions:

1.  Establish proposal files.  Serve as main contact for proposal submissions and confirm proposal receipt.  Maintain proposal database.  Generate and distribute proposal reports to management.  Provide pre-underwriting support and backup proposal drafting for complex or custom proposals.  Provide administrative support for large case proposal bid packages.  Underwrite straightforward proposals when necessary using the appropriate underwriting guidelines. Maintain proposal storage area.

2.  Establish renewal files in compliance with state requirements.  Request necessary renewal       information and serve as main contact for data from Policyowners.  Pre-underwrite renewals and produce renewal correspondence to Policyowners and Financial Representatives.  Maintain renewal data base.  Accurately record renewal information in ACCESS.  Generate and distribute renewal reports to management.  Produce manual Schedule A information and transmit documents to Policyowners and Financial Representatives.

3.  Establish files and review new medical history statements for completeness and adherence to state requirements.  Create and track corresponding information on evidence database.  Evaluate basic medical evidence applications using the appropriate underwriting guidelines and assessment of relevant medical and legal information.  Monitor outstanding requests for information.  Communicate underwriting decisions in accordance with legal requirements.  Act as point of contact for applicants.  Request individual files from NML-Milwaukee and complete and approve Benefit Calculation Worksheets for agent applications.

4.  Review new group application submissions.  Assist underwriters with evaluation of new group application materials.  Accurately enter new group data in ACCESS.

5.  Provide general support and assistance to underwriters, supervisor and manager to meet proposal, renewal and other deadlines as needed.  Participate in projects as requested.


Demonstrated skills: Analytical skills; customer service skills; excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; perform detailed data entry with accuracy;  organize workload and prioritize tasks to meet changing priorities and deadlines; work effectively in collaboration with peers and team members; type 40wpm; perform basic math functions.

Ability to: Learn and apply disability underwriting guidelines, procedures and contract provisions.  Learn and apply medical terminology and medical underwriting guidelines and procedures.  Utilize technical and legal information to make sound underwriting decisions.

Working knowledge of: Current word processing, database and spreadsheet applications.

Advanced knowledge of:  SHAPE  \* MERGEFORMAT      


Education: High school diploma plus one to three years post secondary education or equivalent.

Experience: Two years relevant work experience including demonstrated customer service experience, use of word processing and spreadsheet applications, or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
